Saw "Past Lives" yesterday. Going to catch "Scrapper" if I can (was too busy last week), and definitely looking forward to the new Yorgos Lanthimos film (Poor Things iirc)
It’s been since 2015. I’m a rare sight in movie theaters, especially since the internet censorship bills of 2011 that the movie industry supported. The prospect of those bills becoming law actually had me physically ill on two different occasions.
I saw Scream VI and Bed Rest earlier this year. It is so much more impressive to see great acting on a big screen compared to a tv at home (even with 4k and all that).
We're lucky to have an excellent independent cinema, Cinema Nova, nearby. We buy their books of ten discounted tickets and work through them over a few months. Most recent film we saw there was the Blackberry movie, enjoyed it.
The last movie I saw at the cinema was Independence Day Resurgence - I specifically took my mum to see it, as she was a huuuuge fan of the original, and Roland Emmerich in general.
When I say 'was', I don't mean to imply that she's dead or anything. She's just not a fan of Independence Day, Roland Emmerich, or the cinema anymore, after that.
If you count 2020 as the last year of the 2010s, it was last decade. It was "Birds of prey". Between the pandemic-that-isn't-over and the fact that no movie has excited me enough to go to a theater, it's been pure streaming for me since then.
@ixtlidekami Times are from present. So "past decade" would be the period from 20 Sept 2013 through 19 Sept 2022, though I'll allow fuzzing on the day/month by a bit.
"2020" is then "within the past decade, but not the most recent year".
I'd been interested in how cinema-viewing habits have changed, and am chasing a hunch that most people are going to theatres relatively infrequently. That's obviously been influenced strongly by the COVID-19 pandemic (still ongoing, and surging again in the Northern Hemisphere as both colder weather and schools return, both fairly ideal spreading conditions). Though I'd suspected some decline even before that.
I'd say that movie quality has been in decline for more than a few years. Lots of sequels of dubious quality, unnecessary reboots (to us, the public), new films copying one another. Add the pandemic and even more not-so-good films, and you have the current crisis.
Then only film from this year I'm interested is Oppenheimer, and I'll wait until it's in streaming.
I've only seen three movies in the theatre since covid and one of them was the Barbie movie last month. No regrets. (Also I went to a 10am showing and was able to get a seat away from most people.)
I go to the cinema most weeks. I go for the presence of strangers. A little hangout in the village square while someone does tricks or tells a story. It's work for me to watch any media like that by myself at home. If I were rich beyond measure and could have the Metropolitan Opera brought to my house, I would still put on a tux and go to the opera in person, instead.

While we'd never condone lining your pockets and purses with dollar store candy and snacks before heading to a movie, it can be pretty tempting to do exactly that once you take a look at the high menu prices for movie theater food.

I don’t plan on going ever again. I think I saw Black Panther in the movie theater, but it was around that time anyway was the last time I went. The seats are uncomfortable, it’s too loud, it’s too expensive, and I’m not at all interested in getting airborne AIDS, so I don’t see myself ever going to a movie theater ever again.
Last film I saw in a theatre was Captain Underpants. My daughter and I had just finished the books. They're weren't a huge deal in the UK, we'd been gifted them by US cousins. We wore our CU t-shirts and laughed like drains at all the in-jokes.
But honestly, the price of tickets, COVID, streaming and the fact we've got a 60" TV at home means I'll happily never go back. I just don't see the point. Unless and until CU2 comes out.
I've been going to the movie theater regularly after a brief interregnum (Joker in 2019 was the last one for a year and half), and mostly because it's Alamo Drafthouse. Excellent food and drinks delivered to your seat, reliable caption viewers. 😍
My movie theatre trip last Friday was an exception: It was the premiere of the new Aki Kaurismäki movie. His are still those kind of films that I just need to see in a proper cinema. And in premiere, if possible.
But before that…. whheee… can’t even remember, tbh.

I'd like to see what the impact of Covid-19 has been based on more robust methodology. Though I suspect there's been something of a long-term secular trend, based on costs, repetitive and childish plots, improved television and streaming options (despite not watching broadcast/cable television, I'll allow that there've been some excellent series out, and have caught a few of those on video release).
@lordbowlich My brain took a moment to parse N95 as something other than a new film rating along the lines of NC-17. And was having difficulty rationalising the film-rating interpretation.
Though on second thought, rating film screenings as N95 might make some sense in our New Endemic Age.
Just like I mentioned for The 4400, I have not seen the last season of The Dead Zone I have on disc either. Here I have seen season one to four on my discs and watched them many years ago, but forgot to watch my season five disc. I've found out there actually is a sixth season as well.
I watched the series because of Nicole de Boer, but her involvement became smaller and smaller, explaining my lack of interest. In this fifth season she's only in a few episodes. More in the sixth.
Let's see whether I still remember the plot. Some guy, Nicole's character's husband gets into a coma. Many years later he unexpectedly wakes up, finding his wife remarried with his best friend. He also finds that he suddenly has visions of things, and decides his mission is to stop bad events and investigate crimes.

It starts with the Christmas episode that other lists have as the last episode of season four. It's exactly as you would expect a Christmas episode to be on American television. Now for the real season start.
Database disk had filled up, so thanks to the elasticity of EBS I could just increase the size.
I do think however that on a single user instance, a db of around 30GB is too much. But then I think we shouldn't be storing remote content, but we do.
The way American tv series are made, causes them to often feel like a book of which the last chapter is missing. The hope is that you've lost interest in the book by the time you get to that chapter. Sometimes you get a quick summary of how the author meant to wrap things up in that chapter.
I don't check Twitter everyday anymore, since there literally are days there are no new posts. Just checked and the most recent one was 12 September. The joys of a highly curated experience.

There's a little tearing effect due to the low frame rate and the display being single, not double-buffered, but considering this is a $4 microcontroller module running Arduino, it's very impressive! This may be the first time we've seen reasonable size-and-quality video+audio playback! This was our last 'test' for the ESP32-S3 TFT Experimenter board.
All functionality has been tested, and it's ready to go out for manufacture - only one blue-wire fix is needed to change the default I2C address of the GPIO expander :)

A long time ago I watched The 4400, a series with Jacqueline McKenzie. I have all four seasons on disc, but somehow never got around to watching the final fourth season. Let's start it now, I hope I remember enough of the previous seasons.
It's a somewhat scifi series, with 4400 people suddenly returning to earth after presumably having been abducted by aliens. Jacqueline is not one of those, but a police person investigating things around it. As strange things happen: they start to show special abilities, they form a cult like organisation, and what really happened to them while they were missing is still unknown.
I liked seeing Eliza Dushku in the two seasons of Dollhouse. The concept allowed her to act different characters each episode and I see why she (co-)created the show like that. It's not unlike iZombie in that respect, where Rose McIver had great fun acting differently each week.
But the concept of people having their mind completely wiped and replaced by another personality, then sent on engagements with often (as they call it in the show) 'romantic' aspects, I choose to see as something purely fictional. If you'd consider it as a real thing, there's obviously a big problem with (lack of) consent. In show they have a flimsy excuse of a contract signed by participants. iZombie had Liv's personality only half mixed with someone else's, and that's actually quite smart.
It was weird seeing how in some episodes writers were well aware of this consent problem and dealt with the consequences in the story, then in a next episode it was as if they themselves were wiped and they were oblivious again (but this time with a male subject).

It's a bit light on storytelling and on characterisation, but entertaining enough.
Maybe the "Dawn Alert!" over the PA system of the vampire coven was the best bit.
Selene does so much pining for her daughter Eve and others do so much searching for her, that maybe they should rewatch Underworld: Awakening and see India Eisley as Eve. Somehow the memory of that performance is what underpins this film.

I didn't know Voyager 1 is still within the Oort Cloud, because I thought when people say 'interstellar space' they mean beyond the solar system. Things I learnt...
But Voyager 1 hasn't left the solar system. At 161 AU, its current distance from the Sun is a fraction of Sedna's 936 AU aphelion (though it is currently further out than the minor planet).
And it's nowhere near the inner edge of the Oort cloud, thousands of AU from the sun.
This chart shows Voyager 1's location in 2013, with distance from the sun plotted on a log scale. It is at roughly the same place today, since the next step on the scale jumps from 100 to 1000 AU.
I once said that trains in the Netherlands were ok as long as you don't need to go anywhere, and only after I said it realised how much this described them completely failing at their purpose.
What I meant is that it's a problem if you depend on them, like for getting to work (not just on time, but at all). If you are just planning an optional trip outside of rush hour and are ok with going somewhere completely different instead, then it's fine. #PublicTransport
