Content warning: Pinned post, about following from multiple addresses
Hi, when I follow someone I usually do this from multiple accounts, with different servers and platforms. This is partially as backup. It’s also because different software has different features. E.g. at the moment of writing I mainly post from my Friendica server, but it doesn’t yet support polls, or account migrations. So I also follow from my Pleroma server, which does notify me someone has migrated.
I also sometimes use platforms that support nomadic identity, that allows my channels on multiple servers to be synced. From software that doesn’t support that, a follow request looks like multiple separate requests from those channels.
Content warning: pinned opinion about nude scenes in films
Many actresses are somewhere in their career forced to do a nude (sex) scene. The male actors hardly ever are. To me the purpose seems sales rather than art. I'd wish for films to never include nude scenes and to always use suggestion instead.

Even though I have been on the fediverse for a few years, I've never done an #Introduction post, so let's do one for this channel.I tend to post about actresses and singers I'm a fan of, sharing news about their new projects as well as my thoughts about films and tv I watch. In between I give my take on political things as well as about the fediverse. When I learn new things hosting a fediverse server or other technical things, I try to share them here too. I live in the Netherlands and occasionally cycle and take photographs. I read and watch sci-fi and fantasy, and am interested in ways to achieve social justice, gender and race equality, sustainable energy use and climate justice.
Feel free to follow, as I will also follow other accounts I find interesting without expectation of them following back. Feel free to share (boost, repeat) my posts if you want, using whatever share function comes with your platform. I tend to close DMs to only allow people I follow. I check my fediverse accounts only one or a few times a day, typically on my phone or tablet, so I tend to not be part of live discussions.

Tip: tutanota(.com etc) allows three custom domains for around half their price, ideal for mailboxes that don't need imap.

"You should stay home if you're sick, have that salad instead of pizza, stop complaining, etc."
"You should do this, that, the other thing or STOP doing this, that, or the other thing."
Please, before you "should" someone, stop to think that maybe their circumstances are not yours. Should someone stay home if sick? Yes. But does everyone have sick time to do that? No.
Maybe someone's complaints are valid, or they had a salad for lunch.
Please, let's stop dictating what people 'should' do

True, and I think "someone" and "people" include ourselves
Yes, I check my actions and my motives. I attempt to do the next right thing. But I try not to frame it as "I should..." Past tense is even worse. "I should have...". Or, " I shouldn't have..."
I do not find it helpful to "should" all over myself
“Don’t tell people they shouldn’t drive drunk! You don’t know their life, what if they NEED to go somewhere? Maybe they drive ok drunk! Mind your own business!”
“Don’t tell people they shouldn’t abuse their kids! Maybe that kid really did need to get smacked! You don’t know what they go through with that kid. Are you even a parent?”
Ewwww this is NOT the way to exist in a healthy society.

Vinyl lovers with records: Keeps records in their sleeves, uses white gloves to remove the record, rubs an anti-static brush over the record, puts record into a hermetically sealed environment where a stylus lightly touches the record with an angelic kiss.
Vinyl lovers with CDs: Pulls the coffee cup off of the CD, flings it off of two walls where it ricochets into their Playstation 3 slot. A blob of peanut butter and jelly drips from the slot. When the disc is done the disc barely ejects before someone pulls it from the slot and uses it to skid across the floor in their human shuffleboard contest.

I *buy* vinyl for albums that I love because I can still play -- pops, scratches, skips, and all --vinyl records that my grandparents bought as teenagers in the 1930s, on a cheap, easily accessible player.
I've got CDs from less that 20 years ago that just don't play on some, or sometimes *any*, hardware I can find.
My hearing went to shit decades ago so I'm not particularly interested in the audiophile perspective; I just want my grandkids to be able to listen, you know?
@whitneymcn My counter-example is that i still have compact discs that I bought in high school (back in the 1980s) that still play fabulously. I'm meticulous with my discs to a point of obsession.
Drawer players, eschewing slot players did the trick.
There's probably not much of an argument to be had here, alas: "if you take care of your physical media well, they'll continue to work." We'll have to just agree.
Except for cassettes: that tape stretched out and distorted super quickly, which is why there used to be cassette tape tumbleweeds at the side of every highway in the US. Rage-throwing of shitty cassettes. ;)
My 16yo child buys cassettes again these days.
What a world. :)
You forgot the part where the dvd drive is a great coffee cup holder when empty. Or not empty.

If you're in the US and you've also been idly wondering why "I don't like to drive at night" has become such a common thing to say in the past few years, stand near to a modern LED streetlamp and block it with your hand. In about two thirds of a second, the whole road brightens up as your pupils open.
You're not just getting old; between over-bright streetlights, over-bright headlights of oncoming cars, over-bright instrument clusters, over-bright porch lighting, nobody can see in the dark anymore.
Just in the last decade we've made it much harder and more dangerous to drive at night. Oh, and we also gave up the stars.

This is probably not how physics works but I can dream
we REALLY need some regulation of these lights. Both brightness and color band. ASAP.
This is going to cause accidents and kill people.
This is an exceptionally frustrating arms race because there are no winners other than the manufacturers. Drivers are less safe, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users are less safe, wildlife is less safe (and almost certainly more affected by the brighter and generally bluer light), the skies are emptier, and life after dark is generally more irritating.
What's worst is that I can't see a path back from this. That "use dimmer headlights" ad campaign will be a tough sell...
This is the future that they took from us: The Polaroid Headlight System
Why the changing colour of our streetlights could be a danger for insect populations
The increasing prevalence of white LED streetlamps spells worrying population declines for insects like moths. The Conversation
This is so true. I'd rather drive at night in some super rural area with no streetlights these days than anywhere near a city.
(I mean this is true in general, but especially at night).
The problem has indeed gotten worse. Five years ago, I was thinking the problem with the nighttime glare or car head and taillights was because of my aging eyes. No, it's because the lights got brighter.
When I am out inline skating after dark (which is often), I regularly have my left hand ready to block the light of an oncoming vehicles, and that includes the handle bar lights on many bicycles.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/05/business/led-hid-headlights-blinding.html
yes, i had a scary incident a few years back when i was driving down the highway at night in winter, on an icy road. i saw flashing emergency lights ahead but because they were so dazzling i literally could not tell that the vehicles were parked in the middle of the road (and not driving along with the rest of traffic) until it was almost too late to stop.
wtf good are lights so bright that they blind the people they're supposed to be warning?
Interesting to note the spike in nighttime pedestrian fatalities starting in 2014. Daytime fatalities increased 16% in the 2010s, but night went up 54%.
See p.17 here, but don’t take this as an endorsement of GHSA or the overall report: https://www.ghsa.org/sites/default/files/2021-03/Ped%20Spotlight%202021%20FINAL%203.23.21.pdf
Brighter is not always better.
You really, really don't want to be blinding the other people on the road. Or yourself. Honestly.
@thegibson We’re driving an older car and what the hell happened to new headlights?
They should really be regulated to a maximum brightness federally. It is straight up unsafe.
I used to love how the lights looked at night, but these brighter ones are almost more depressing.
When I lived in San Jose, CA the city was lit at night by very orange sodium vapor light, because the color was easily filtered out by the Lick Observatory overlooking town. People complained because it looked odd; but one could easily see the streets magically because night vision wasn’t impaired. I could actually see the stars at night from my house downtown in one of the largest cities in California.
They’ve started replacing them all with LED.
The history of headlights is actually really interesting; back when regulators were less scared to create rules, we had standards that basically meant every car had the same lighting system, designed with glare in mind. That was done away with in the 80s, and for 30 years, no one could really make too much of a mess because of the limitations of incandescent lightbulbs.
LEDs changed that, and so, in the quest to see better individually, we collectively see worse. Oops.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/bright-digital-billboard-on-yellowhead-an-eyesore-motorist-says-1.4502544
But I don’t think LED itself is the problem. It’s more the idea of „brighter, let’s make night into day“ (and failing to do so).
@hollie
All the reflections cause colored dots in my eyes.
If I need to venture out it has to be on very familiar roads.
Sucks!!!
This organization that advocates for less nighttime light-pollution might be of interest to you.
I like to take a walk after dinner, and at my latitude it's dark then at this time of year.
If I'm walking along a road, I spend the entire time holding up one hand to shade the headlights of oncoming traffic. If I didn't do that, I couldn't see the sidewalk. The glare is astonishing.
I don’t know if it’s visual or some sort of mental thing but there is a point for me when driving at night becomes very difficult. My astigmatism makes it worse.
Regular night driving is okay, but it’s getting unbearable in the rain. I will actually avoid it. Newer cars with limited visibility and auto dimming mirrors help. Driving my car from the 90’s with great visibility is actually way worse at night.
when I am driving at night,
Am often quite taken aback at how bright other drivers set their instrument/dashlights.
no wonder they never dim their headlights, they're driving utterly blind from the dash glare, which also reflects onto the windscreen
Who's with me?? #WeirdCarMastodon
This is timely. Yesterday while out & about DURING THE DAY I was parked at a certain location and passed the time by watching vehicles pull out of a car wash across the street.
The headlamps on some of the vehicles were so bright that I had to look away. 🙄
those of us who have already fairly photosensitive eyes are doomed. I hate driving at night and my vision isn't even bad!
Between the hyper white lights and the cheapest possible non reflective paint that Oregon chooses along with a lack of road reflectors I'm certain it's not a matter of IF but WHEN I have an accident at night at this point
I remember when they started first using them when I was a teen/young adult and I remember CONSTANTLY complaining about how they both give me headaches and make it impossible to see the road or traffic at all.
My opinions haven't changed in the least regarding this. I feel like people are blasting strobe lights in my eyes when the sun goes down.
This. It's not just the headlights. The LED strip outlines most modern cars have *around* the headlights as always-on running lights seem like they outshine the headlights. And they have to be *turned off* when the blinker is on to allow you to see the blinker at all.
I want to clarify that I don't think we should ditch LEDs. We do have LEDs that have a much less harsh spectrum, but they're more expensive. Yay, unregulated market forces! 🙃
(stuff I hear from boomers)
BTW erasing visibility of the stars is for the benefit of the flat earthers so they will not have to face inconvenient evidence.

Second time this week that a Dutch word I didn't know the English translation for, when I looked it up didn't seem to have a translation. Seems we have exhausted the English language.
For the sport 'korfbal' we get no further than 'korfball', with 'korf' being the Dutch word for 'basket'. I guess 'basketball' was somehow already taken.
Then today I forgot to run cold water over my boiled egg, which supposedly makes them easier to peel. We call it 'schrikken', a homonym for the word meaning 'to scare' but with a different conjugation. Turns out the internet thinks none of the English speaking people made up a word for that? ('Shock' is the closest but apparently not really used in this context)

A couple of years ago there was a news item about a new Dutch dictionary being presented, I think to some royal person. The dictionary was different in that it attempted to be almost, but not entirely, complete. It comprised several volumes over all the shelves of one or more bookcases. We have many words.
(We also cheat by combining words together to make new words in a way that English doesn't)
