I'm doing a rewatch in honour of Dafne Keen's birthday last Thursday. The Acolyte is not out yet and Ana is still not showing anywhere on streaming in my country, so it'll be an episode of His Dark Materials. Episode 1x05 is the one I like to watch. Where Dafne shows that Lyra being brave doesn't mean she isn't scared.

Dafne Keen is such a good actress. A lead character can be made to look cool by writing cool things for them to do, but that's not the trick here. With Dafne's Lyra it's pure acting. It's interacting with other characters, the emotions, the frustration, the drive. And I'm also noticing that she has chemistry with every character she interacts with, not just Will but also Lee, Ma Costa and the leaders of the Gyptians.

Rewatching His Dark Materials series 3 from my blu-ray that arrived a few days ago. At episode two, so bear on a boat. Lyra is still asleep, but fortunately Dafne Keen has actual acting to do besides lying in bed, also these early episodes.

Content warning: His Dark Materials series 3 spoilers

Seeing the BBC version of His Dark Materials series 3 and there are rather beautiful subtitles on all the 'mulefa' dialogue. They show both the original and the translation as Mary is slowly learning the language. On the HBO broadcast we didn't get this at all. There there were whole scenes in this fantasy language, with no indication what it was about. That was weird and now I'm jealous...

I'm realising yet again that I want to see everything else Dafne Keen will act in as well, and that it means I will have to watch some more Star Wars.

I don't know why the main socials of His Dark Materials are promoting today as being the premiere of series three, since we're already four episodes in, but I guess they have a bit of a UK focus. Anyway, UK people, in about twenty minutes it starts for you on BBC one!

And stick with it, series three takes a few episodes to get into it.

There are subtitles for the sign language bits! When it was on HBO Max, they just sort of assumed you understood sign language.

Since HBO Max has not put His Dark Materials series 3 online yet, despite it being 5 December already, here's a Dafne Keen interview about s3 in W to pass the time.

Starting a rewatch of His Dark Materials, all the way from series one, because series three starts soon. This was the first time I saw Dafne Keen and the reason I watched Logan. I think most people will have seen her in Logan first and be very impressed by her and the intensity of the character, but also seeing her first in His Dark Materials impresses a lot.

Watching it on HBO Max instead of my blu-ray, because views count in this day and age. Production and tv companies really look at views and social media engagement to decide who to hire, what kind of show to commission. Record companies look at number of likes whether to finance a tour. Casting people look at imdb rankings, which are based in part on searches. It's unfair, but to support your faves, engage.

To prepare for series three of His Dark Materials on 5 December, there's this recap of series one and two on Instagram, with quotes from the cast, including Dafne Keen. (I see what she meant about the dirt...)

We'll get season three of His Dark Materials on 5 December, so the interviews start coming. Dafne Keen is interviewed in Marie Claire about finding the character, how the word 'need' was key in season one and the dirt in this season, and about playing the more grown up Lyra this time. Great photo shoot too.

Dafne Keen looking back to yesterday when it was her 17th birthday, which I missed because I'm an idiot and thought it was today. Well, I've not really booted up yet this year, so what'd you expect.

Happy Birthday for yesterday and also already for next year! Hope to get His Dark Materials S3 soon.
