Rewatching His Dark Materials series 3 from my blu-ray that arrived a few days ago. At episode two, so bear on a boat. Lyra is still asleep, but fortunately Dafne Keen has actual acting to do besides lying in bed, also these early episodes.

His Dark Materials series 3

Sometimes I flippantly say to myself that I like all of His Dark Materials series 3 except the business with Lord Asriel, his war, the Angels and the Authority, Will's father, the wandering doctor... which is basically all of it. But that's not fair, there's enough of Lyra, Mrs Coulter is also interesting though I don't understand her, the Magisterium is always funny with Dafne's father chasing Lyra.

But there's a thing I really dislike about Lord Asriel: he pretends to give leaders of other beings all kinds of fancy titles and a seat on the council, but he never listens to them and always does his own thing. "I need your leadership" he tells someone and proceeds to completely ignore them.

Also Lord Asriel: what's with people and this Lyra obsession all the time?

Will Keen: "Tell me the name of the girl!"
Me, at the tv: "She's your daughter!"

The land of the dead storyline is really the best. Very Lyra centric, very much true to her character.

It's so beautiful in this Land of the Dead episode that all the people there have lost the memories of the outside world, but crave these memories, so when Lyra starts reminiscing with Roger, they get drawn to them. How they filmed that with the colour slowly returning is also very beautiful.

Edit: it's two episodes of that storyline and neither is called Land of the Dead... It's No Way Out and The Abyss.

The role of the serpent is so weird: wander about for over a season, tell a story and go home. Still sort of beautiful in the end though.

I'm now at the bench, i.e. near the end of the rewatch.

Lyra's world invests more in the upkeep of public infrastructure than our world does.
