Hi, when I follow someone I usually do this from multiple accounts, with different servers and platforms. This is partially as backup. It’s also because different software has different features. E.g. at the moment of writing I mainly post from my Friendica server, but it doesn’t yet support polls, or account migrations. So I also follow from my Pleroma server, which does notify me someone has migrated.
I also sometimes use platforms that support nomadic identity, that allows my channels on multiple servers to be synced. From software that doesn’t support that, a follow request looks like multiple separate requests from those channels.
I have so many ideas to un-mess-ify my blog, but it's so much work that I can't bring myself to begin doing it. And I'm also somehow making things more complicated than they need to be, adding moving servers, going multi-site, new domains, caching, to just reorganising content and making a homepage.
If you want advise on how to make simple things more difficult, ask me.

What finally broke the Tumblr software, because I suspect they weren't aware of all the places in the code it was used, was that they stopped using post types. So I want post types back on my hypothetical ideal platform. It would have post types like:
a note, short and only text
an article, longer like a mobile web page with photos and videos between sections of text
a photo post with one or more photos, with a short caption, shown in a layout the poster controls
a video post with a description
an audio post with a description
posts asking for interactions like: poll, question, form, q&a
a link share post with introduction text (which includes the link preview from the sender side)

In my quest to find how to do 'unlisted' videos on PeerTube, I found that PeerTube has unlisted videos. At least if you switch the UI to English, one of the privacy options is 'unlisted'. In Dutch it is called 'Geheim', which means 'Secret', which is much closer to the real behaviour. The 'unlisted' videos of PeerTube don't work at all like 'unlisted' posts, but more like the 'sharing with link' secrecy setting of Microsoft Sharepoint and similar.
I want something that is available publicly to guests, listed on my public profile, maybe notified to followers, maybe found in a search, but which doesn't show up in a federated timeline ('Recently Added' in PeerTube) on other servers. I want to avoid having to setup a separated server without federation to do that.
I'm now thinking of setting up a separate PeerTube account and/or channel especially for unlisted (but actually secret) videos, then setup a separate Friendica account (because 'unlisted' is a profile setting, not a post setting in Friendica) or Wordpress blog to manually publish my 'secret' videos in an u

PeerTube is one of the few platforms that have a 'license' field on each post/video. I would prefer that any post/video with an unknown (or non-free) license would never appear publicly (to unauthenticated guests) on other servers in some 'federated'/'Recently Added' timeline. I think Mastodon/Friendica/Pleroma are wrong in appearing to host items of which it doesn't know the license, which for these platforms is all items. One of the reasons I switched off public viewing of 'global community'.

But I'm not here to throw rocks. I'm here to present an alternative.

Searches return ActivityPub collections when fetched with ActivityPub headers, Nomad collections when fetched with Nomad headers, and text/html when fetched with a browser. Pure fediverse implementations need only support ActivityPub. Would be quite happy to work with other federated communities on further standardisation and refinements. For now you can provide feedback and discuss this in the @streams@unfediverse.com group ( unfediverse.com/channel/stream… ) and I'll create a separate working group if there's enough interest. Would love it if somebody would like to step in and create the FEP for this as my available time is quite constrained. This implementation will run on a rasberry pi or shared hosting using any search backend you wish to implement.
What opensearch brings to the table is a standardised and mature specification related to discovery of the search endpoint(s).
Since we already support federated search based on this model and also have long-standing support for opensearch, merging these should be not be terribly difficult -- and is currently in progress.

Everytime an organisation posts something on Mastodon, there's someone in the replies saying 'you should also make a Peertube account' (or Pixelfed, etc). It's so tiring. Can we stop driving people away?
Everytime a software developer posts about a new feature or product they're making, someone replies with all the other technologies that should have been used instead. Can we stop it? Can we start accepting that other people may do things that don't fit in your own world view?
Like "I bought a roomba!" -> "no, no, no, you should have strapped your vacuum cleaner to your cat".
This is a great idea. Millions of TVs using a bit less will add up to save a lot of energy. The same idea could have saved energy years ago when we had colour CRT TVs as those also used more power when the screen was bright. It wouldn't have made much difference in the B&W days because those TVs usually had an automatic level control resulting in more or less the same average brightness over the whole screen whatever the contents.
Interesting piece from the techie folks at #BBC. I hadn’t really considered the number of folks who listen to radio via their smart TVs. Great opportunity to consume less power when Media companies opt to use a darkened background. I imagine the same holds true for #podcast and #StreamingMusic apps as well.

@joland I remember having my PC audio routed through my external display, and being annoyed the sound would cut out when the display went into standby... Apparently the speakers could not work independently of the display 🙄
This is honestly a really good idea and a lens that not many people approach building for the web with. Websites and apps have a carbon footprint and you can mitigate some of it with this kind of thinking. Also the idea of web optimization and how fast your site is factors into how wasteful your site might be.

On Saturday 8 July 2023, user accounts started disappearing from the Vivaldi Social Mastodon instance. What was going on, how did this happen, and what were the consequences?
This is a very long blog post, but to be fair, this was also to be a very long weekend.
If you want to skip to the conclusion, there’s a TL;DR (too long; didn’t read) section at the end. Something’s not right It was around 17:25 Oslo time (CEST) on the Saturday that I first noticed something was wrong. I’d just got home from a bike ride, and when I happened to check my Vivaldi Social tab, it suddenly asked me to log in again. “Unusual”, I thought, but I wasn’t immediately alarmed by it. But then when I did log in, I saw that my home timeline was now completely empty. I quickly reached out to my colleagues.

My fellow sysadmin Hlini very quickly got back to me. No work was ongoing, and his account was showing the same symptoms as mine. He offered to start heading to a computer so he could help me, an offer which I gratefully accepted.
By 17:32, another colleague outside of the sysadmin team had also noticed the same issue. I started to look into the database to see what was going on. Something bad has happened Looking at the database I could see that the affected accounts had apparently been deleted, and then recreated as a completely new account when the user logged back in.
Immediately, I started looking to see what database backups were available. As expected, we had a nightly backup from 23:00 UTC on Friday night. I started copying the file to somewhere I could make use of it.
While I was waiting for the backup file to copy, I started checking the database for other users that might be affected. Jón von Tetzchner’s account and another one that I checked had also been deleted, but had not yet been recreated, likely because those users had not tried to log back into their accounts yet.
By this time, Hlini had arrived at a computer and started looking into things with me.
I started checking the web server logs for account deletion requests, but nothing matching the account deletions showed up; and then I realized something else was odd about these deletions.
Normally when an account is deleted in Mastodon, the username is permanently reserved as unusable. If you were to try to create a new account with the same name as a deleted account, it would not allow it (since, due to the nature of the Fediverse, having a new account with the same address as an old one would not be a good thing).
But in the case of these deletions, we were getting reassigned the exact same usernames, so these could not be not normal deletions.
By 18:39, Hlini had figured out the pattern: all accounts with an ID lower than 142 (ie. the oldest accounts) were missing from the database.
We hadn’t seen any discussion from other Mastodon server admins about anything like this, and we wondered if this could be something unique to our setup – after all, Vivaldi Social uses vivaldi.net accounts for logins (thanks to Mastodon’s OAuth support) instead of the normal signup and login system of Mastodon. We started considering asking the Mastodon developers for help, and we also started discussing strategies for restoring the lost data from the backup.
But then… Something bad is happening right now At 19:10, I checked the database again, and I saw that all accounts with an ID lower than 217 were now missing from the database, and that number was increasing. This meant that accounts were still being actively deleted from the database.
By this point we both agreed that we needed more help, so at 19:18 we contacted the Mastodon developers. We immediately got a reply from Renaud, and he pinged Claire and Eugen to enlist their help. Stemming the flood At 19:20, Hlini restarted all of the docker instances in our Mastodon setup. The deletions seemed to stop the moment he did this. The lowest ID in the database was now 236.
Fortunately it turned out that it would stay that way. The investigation begins 198 accounts in total had been deleted during the course of this incident, and over the next few hours, together with the Mastodon devs, we started looking into what could be going on. On Eugen’s suggestion, we looked into the possibility of it being the UserCleanupScheduler deleting accounts that were “unconfirmed”, but this was eventually ruled out, as the deleted users could never have matched the query that it operated on.
Since we had upgraded to Mastodon 4.1.3 just 48 hours before the incident occurred, the Mastodon devs looked into all the code changes between v4.1.2 and v4.1.3 to see if anything there could be related. They even (and I cannot credit them enough for this) went the extra mile and looked through our published changes to see if any of the changes we had made could possibly lead to this. The conclusion though was that none of the changes could have triggered anything like this.
At the suggestion of Renaud and Eugen, we checked the filesystem to see if the deletions were being done directly in the database, or if they were being triggered by Mastodon itself. We could see that the avatar and header images for the deleted accounts had themselves also been deleted. This meant that the deletions had to be coming from the Mastodon application itself. An attack? We also started looking for signs of system intrusion, since it was certainly a possibility that this was some kind of deliberate attack. I spent some time checking the various logs that we had available to us, but I didn’t find anything (though in these cases, the absence of evidence can never rule out the possibility).
Because Mastodon v4.1.3 included a security fix, the devs also looked into the possibility of a related exploit, for which we combed through the logs, and examined the filesystem for evidence of such an attack. Again though, nothing was found.
We debated whether we should take Vivaldi Social offline altogether while we continued the investigation. The Mastodon devs gave arguments in both directions:
In favour of taking it offline: if we have to roll back the database to the backup, then more content will be lost the longer we keep it up.
In favour of keeping it running: if it is an attack, and it resumes, it might give us more opportunity to investigate how it’s being done.
We ultimately decided to keep it running. In truth what swung the decision that way was probably not the balance between the above arguments, but just a simple fact of us being sysadmins…
I think both Friendica and Peertube don't support unlisted-like posts.
The Mastodon unlisted scope could be useful if you want to add a post that's visible to everybody even when not logged in, but you don't want to bother the global or local timelines with it. It is still sent to followers though, which may or may not be useful. The big problem with Mastodon's implementation is that I've heard these posts also don't show up in searches, not even with hashtags, which doesn't make any sense to me.
For Peertube I'm looking for a scope that's public locally, but is not public when federated out. In fact I believe this should be the default for any platform: don't show publically what you've only received from other servers.

Another reason we should not let the receiving server resolve a link preview (so apart from the ddos that is many receiving servers at once loading from a site, bringing small blogs down): your text in the preview will be in the language of where the server is located. E.g. on mastodon.social previews are often in German.
If the client resolves the link preview, load will be spread in time and the reader gets the text in their language. If the sending server resolves the link (my preferred solution), only one request is done to the site (much fairer) and the text will be in a language the poster expects and can see.

This so easily could have been a cheap comedy with unrealistic studio shots, but it isn't. It looks quite convincing and realistic, in a dangling over great heights sort of way, and is entertaining enough to watch. This seems like a welcome addition to the pantheon of tv series, shame it's so unknown. Sometimes I look up the strangest things. This time, driven by annoyance that films increasingly aren't distributed in my country, I looked up how much it would cost to be a film distributor, expecting it to be millions. Turns out it's free? There are different models and some expectations, but in one model you pay the production 30% of gross revenue without an upfront fee. You pay for marketing and investment in e.g. producing a batch of dvds, but what if you don't? Don't (agree to) do any marketing and just stick the file on a server, or use manufacture-on-demand.
Sure for streaming it may cost 100000 to millions per film (what I read). And sure they would expect you to do marketing. And maybe subtitles are nice. And film ratings. And packaging.
And for a production company, even if a film is still looking for a distributor in a territory, signing a single media deal for that territory would loose them the ability to later sign with a real distributor that wants to have all (cinema, dvd, digital, streaming, tv, film clubs, etc).

@Nextcloud 📱☁️💻 I can't find any documentation, for developers or even prospective users, that takes a step back and explains what Nextcloud is, why it is, what it's for and what it's not suitable for. All docs seem to jump from the initial commercial fluff(*) straight into the technical deep end. But also technically, an architectural overview with design decisions etc is useful to decide before you start building an app whether it is suitable for a use case or not.
For example some cloud systems are aimed at publically hosting things, Wordpress/Flickr-style, while others aim to offer access controls for storing and sharing your own files. With Nextcloud being more of the latter I get the impression. Both can be used for both cases, but that would just be a bad idea.
(*) maybe I have too much of a mental block for commercial fluff that I'm not parsing it completely...
@rickyx honestly I think the app that implements flows is broken. I spent three hours but always got some kind of error message telling me the path of the external script is invalid, etc.
@holger totally agree! I have trouble with a proper setup for a little- medium sized companies. Flows but also permissions and sharing/ownership... people coming from ex. GDrive get lost on differences.

Since it's such dreary weather outside, I'm watching A Room with a View so at least someone has something nice to look at outside. It's a film with Helena Bonham Carter of a long time ago. I've seen it before, but I have it on blu-ray now. It's one of her costume dramas.

This Lucy Honeychurch is really a different kind of woman than you'd expect in a costume drama, the opposite of demure. I love how Helena Bonham Carter plays her, as a true independent spirit.
Another dvd to watch: a three part miniseries which is one of the first things I saw Emilia Fox in. Not the first, but it is of long ago. Shooting the Past is about the world of photo archives. I've seen it before and it's quite interesting, mainly character based.
A US property developer realises that he has a battle on his hands when he tries to renovate a London building containing a vast photographic collection and discovers that the library employees will resort to anything to thwart him.
It may be about photo archives, and beautifully shows the stories even in otherwise unremarkable pictures, but it is also about loss and grief. It's very much the moment a doctor gives you a terminal prognosis and you want to just not accept it, but then in a metaphor of photography. #ShootingThePast
When I as a kid consciously started to watch films and notice the performances I liked, I became a big fan of the actresses Jodie Foster, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jane Horrocks and Juliette Binoche. Still am, but there's not so much news about them anymore. And yes, I was very aware those are all J's. Since then I've found great actresses of other generations whose name don't start with a J, I am a big fan of Stephanie Leonidas for example. People who have seen posts of me before most likely have seen me mentioning being a huge fan of Jenna Ortega. Yes, I'm back at the J's.
Now I'm watching an old film, one of my all time favourites, with Jane Horrocks: Life is Sweet. The film is directed and written by Mike Leigh, based on improvisations by the actors during rehearsals, as is his process. Mike Leigh is probably the only director I ever followed, once describing one of his films just with 'it's about... people' because I didn't know anything more to say and later realising this is accidentally a good description of all of his films. They're about people.

This one starts with a panning shot across a row of houses, suggesting that the family we are going to watch is just one of many and we could just as well have watched the story of the people in the other houses. (Edit: that's not actually this one, but another one. It was long ago I saw it...)
In this preview image Jane Horrocks is second from the left, wearing 'the shirt'. Claire Skinner, second from the right playing the other daughter, is a great actress as well.
That scene between Nicola and her mother is one of the best dialogue scenes in films ever. In a sense everything in the film before that leads up to that dialogue.
Played this from my own dvd since it's so not available for streaming, rental or buying digitally that it doesn't even have a JustWatch entry (in my country). Most other films I look up there just say 'not available', suggesting they are available in other countries or were available at some point in the past.
Owning dvd's may seem old fashioned, but is still the only way.

Just watched a film called Hide and Seek which is an American remake of an Asian film called Hide and Seek, neither of which are the film called Hide and Seek that I wanted to see.
It could be a case study in how not to write a film, and as such have some merit. Still interesting enough to sit through it once, though.
