When Republicans are complaining about a thing, it's never really about the thing itself for them. They see politics and I guess all of life as a game, a debating game, where they analyse their opponents and see everything different from the norm as an opportunity to attack their opponents with. While to normal people taking a risk with anything (from fashion choices to supporting something ahead of the bandwagon) would be celebrated, they pounce on it. If it's something actually wrong, they enlarge it beyond recognition.
It's not even about them not doing the same thing. It's still that game: if your opponent has an opportunity to attack you back on the same thing, but doesn't, they don't see their own failing, but their opponent's weakness.
This is even true with Clinton's email server: they weren't phased one bit when it came out they did the same thing, because that never was the issue.
So don't debate back on the issue. Ignore. Don't point out the hypocrisy, they don't care. Don't reply. Counter with things they do wrong, for there are many.
The 2024 Summer Olympics will be in Paris.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will be in Italy.
The 2028 Summer Olympics will be in Los Angeles.
I'd like to see Russia banished from all international sports competitions for at least these next three Olympics and well beyond.
Re-entry by Russia into the community of civilized nations should require:
(1) Ouster of Vladimir Putin and replacement by a legitimately elected leader and legislature.
(2) Withdrawal of all Russian forces from the pre-2014 Ukraine borders.
(3) Funding for the rebuilding of all war-damaged infrastructure and assets in Ukraine.
(4) A sincere and comprehensive acknowledgement of, and atonement for, Russian war crimes, combined with reparations to be distributed to the Ukrainian people.
(5) Surrender of Vladimir Putin and other civilian and military leaders to an international tribunal for a war crimes trial.

Season four of You (on Netflix) will have the amazingly talented Amy-Leigh Hickman in it. I'm also hoping we are getting Jenna Ortega back as Ellie, who already showed her extraordinary talents in S2. That would make for the perfect season!

"Russia threatens to stop supplying gas if not paid in roubles"
Let them. There are short term, midterm and long term solutions that we should have done ages ago. Let's use this blackmail to actually go ahead and achieve energy independence (from some other countries as well) and save the environment at the same time. It'll cost money, damage the economy, but that's both the price to pay for taking a moral stance to not finance a war, and the cost of acting too late to get our energy consumption in order. It's not as if we didn't know this already.

Edit: in trying to find details for the latter point I can only find info about the Spirit rover running out of disk space due to forgetting to delete old files, so nothing to do with inodes nor with a change of plan. So I guess I was misinformed about that.

The more you know - Canada has had no restrictions on abortion at any time in a pregnancy for a few years now. They rightfully concluded it's not the state's business to impose a religious construct.
And it's fine. Their society hasn't collapsed. Abortion hasn't skyrocketed. Their rate was already and still is low.
It turns out that women and their doctors can make their own decisions and don't go around ending pregnancies for fun. There is no reason for regulation of this procedure whatsoever.
We should stop starting with the concession that at some point abortion must be disallowed, and assuming it's just an argument about when. The Roe compromise is garbage. Maybe we'll never get to do it right but we can change the conversation. The only reason to regulate abortion is to score political points.
Of course it's anti-democratic. Conservatives are doing it.
Opinion | America’s restrictive turn on abortion pushes against a regional — and democratic — trend:

This is exactly right because once they get 15 weeks, they go for 10, 6, 0.
This one doesn’t affect public health. It’s nobody else’s business.

Here in Argentina the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy Bill includes gratis abortions in public hospital (up to 14th week). Before the bill abortion rates were high but illegal (illegal unsanitary procedures).
The bill debate was a high topic but once approved there is no going back.

Making it illegal definitely doesn't stop abortion. It just makes it unsafe and unnaccessable for those who aren't pretty well off.
Right wingers are looking to jail people over it, just to make it even worse.
I'm glad to hear other countries handle it better.
In the USA, we are are losing ground. It has been legal nationwide since 1973, and in the last year, bills have passed making it illegal in some states. Last year at six weeks, and just this week, in one state has a bill to make it completely illegal. The Supreme Court has not issued an injunction on the one that is in effect.
Other countries do not seem to have these problems. I think it is already illegal in most countries that have right-wing governments in power, and typically considered a right in liberal democracies, or rights are being expanded in the liberal democracies where it isn't yet legal.

It's also the kind of film where while you're watching it you're already planning to preorder the DVD.
In two days time I get to see Jenna Ortega on the big screen again, this time in X. It's released in US cinemas the 18th, in Dutch cinemas the 17th, but here they even have a preview screening on Wednesday!

An interesting article about trigger warnings and that they may not help, or even harm. The article is from last year and discusses trigger warnings mainly in the context of material you have to read anyway. But there are more general problems with avoiding triggers mentioned, that it can make someone's ptsd central to their identity and prevent healing.

What if Trigger Warnings Don’t Work?
Jeannie Suk Gersen writes about new psychological research indicating that trigger warnings may increase anxiety in students and other individuals suffering from P.T.S.D., and considers what teachers and others ought to do with this new information.Jeannie Suk Gersen (The New Yorker)
