From the trailer and stories you would have expected it to start with the shooting, but it doesn't. It starts with Vada, who's a pretty cool and smart teen, and the sister relationship which is pretty special too.

You can see that it's an actor's film, since it doesn't show the events but people's reactions to the events.

It isn't just about Vada losing her peaceful youth, but also her little sister loses the relationship with her big sister. That's why it was great that this was shown at the beginning. And why it's so understandable that she keeps prodding at Vada for having a reaction.

Also her parents have to deal with this ultimate fear of nearly having lost their child. When the little sister remarks that the shooter followed Vada on Instagram so he must have known her (even though she didn't know him) it brings out renewed sobs from the mother: this brings the horror even closer to her child. Later in the film there's a line where Vada says 'what would you do without me' and her mother had to steady herself.

It would be too easy to depict Vada as totally catatonic after the event. But that's why she's shown as communicative and smart before it happened. After, she still knows how to reach out to people and she seems conscious about trying to process things and knows not to shut people like her parents out. The film basically says that even someone as smart, together and balanced like Vada will be affected by events like this.

Another thing you wouldn't guess from the trailer is that this film at times is very funny.
