If your world view consists of white cowboy hats and black cowboy hats you may want to check whether your white cowboy hats aren't just black cowboy hats that have been spray painted white.

Pinned post, about following from multiple addresses

Hi, when I follow someone I usually do this from multiple accounts, with different servers and platforms. This is partially as backup. It’s also because different software has different features. E.g. at the moment of writing I mainly post from my Friendica server, but it doesn’t yet support polls, or account migrations. So I also follow from my Pleroma server, which does notify me someone has migrated.

I also sometimes use platforms that support nomadic identity, that allows my channels on multiple servers to be synced. From software that doesn’t support that, a follow request looks like multiple separate requests from those channels.

It's around freezing outside, so it's a great time for the heating in my flat to not be working.

It's fixed! It took a few days but it's so great to be able to be in a living room where I can raise the temperature above 15 degrees.

Glow is also in Best this year, as last year, side-Glow as it were.

More of Glow in Best, with the Windmill, the cemetery and eyes at the train station. The main Glow festival is of course in Eindhoven.

I had also taken photos in Best some days earlier with my RF 50mm 1.8 lens. Nothing wrong with those results, but I haven't processed these to jpeg yet. The 50mm, on an APS-C camera, didn't allow me to capture whole buildings, yet the aperture difference of 1.8 vs 4.5-6.3 makes itself felt in the dark...

I tried to take some photos with my Canon EOS R10, with the RF 50mm 1.8 lens, some with the RF 28mm 2.8.

As long as I live, I will never understand why America would rather elect a singularly worthless white rapist as president than an exceptionally impressive black woman.

Misinformation. I saw something tonight that postulated that 50% of Americans have <6th grade reading comprehension. People like that are fish in a barrel to the likes of Musk and other right wing propaganda.

So the US has openly voted for fascism. The first time there was the excuse of populism, but this time the mask was off.

Just remember, we're not 1930s Germany. WE ARE HYPER-ARMED. There will be no house to house harassment. 8/10 houses will present a serious fire fight. Nazis didn't have to deal with that. It's time the left recognizes what the 2nd amendment is actually for.

Fixed my @F-Droid app on my tablet as I found it had a radically different idea of which versions of several apps were available than my phone had. Both were also behind reality, but that is normal. I noticed this because the @Tuta app failed to download, maybe because such an old version (August) no longer existed. Somehow going into the 'nearby people' function triggered a new wifi permission popup, or maybe it was me toggling wifi off-and-on that fixed it. But after that thumbnails and screenshots loaded again and new(-ish) app versions were shown.

In researching this I found the remark that F-droid has supported unattended upgrades for a while. That is a feature I was really waiting for, as clicking Install on each separate update then wait a minute then click the next etc was getting really annoying. But it is not happening for me. Turns out that this is only available for newer Android versions, which neither of these devices has... See f-droid.org/2024/02/01/twif.ht… .

The more a certain presidential candidate comes out as fascist and racist, rather than just hinting at it, the more the billionaires are standing behind him, rather than just hinting at it.

Being in an office building where all the lights are on motion detectors. It's late, everybody is gone home already. Everywhere it's dark, the only light that's on is around my desk. Suddenly a light switches on in another corridor. I look up. No one's there.

I still don't understand how a commercial company can claim to own the name of a community project and blame another company, its direct competitor, for using (or hinting at) that name. Neither should own that name, or control the community website.

@meljoann @radiofreefedi yeah it’s a pity we still didn’t found a way to focus on RFF pilot! We are trying to get the 1.0 out and at same time find sustainability to pay ourselves and onboard new devs among other things. Maybe applying to a grant to develop the needed features could be a way to push this forward? Happy to chat more about it…
in reply to Bonfire

That’s understandable, yeah we’re in a tricky position for grants as we’re so international. A grant to support both your work and our main dev would be amazing.

I’m not a tech person myself (just experience with Arts funding). So, a bit out of the loop regarding funding help available… any leads you could point us to? I’d be happy to help with the application

So there are people in the US who are undecided between a clearly unqualified openly racist candidate, and a clearly qualified person of colour. Sounds to me they are not undecided at all.

Could be WordPress, could be the Dutch extremist government, could be something else. Who knows.

Made it to the start of the Eindhoven City Run (5km, this year relegated to the Saturday and not on the actual Marathon day). Also made it to the finish, but I was too tired to take another photo. My time was 34:29, not the slowest ever despite having to hold back due to an injury (the uphill bits were difficult for more than the normal reasons). Made it back home too and added to my collection.

I'd wish they had changing facilities near the finish line, or at all since on Saturday nothing is available. It was a long cold walk back in my t-shirt... Sitting here now trying to warm back up.

Today it's exactly one year ago that an unthinkable massacre was committed by a terrorist organisation against ordinary people in Israel. I'm still hoping the people responsible will be handed over to international courts to face justice.

During this year unthinkable war crimes have been committed in what followed as a response to that massacre. So much so that they overshadow the massacre itself in the public debate. These war crimes have to stop immediately and unilaterally. For both sides there should be no need for negotiations or agreements to stop war crimes. Stop bombing civilians, now. Stop involving civilians in your fight. I'm also hoping these war crimes go to the international courts.

These are the more immediate things I'm hoping to see happening. More idle hope I have is that someone realises that by always retaliating, the fighting never stops; a brave leader (so not one of the ones in power today) is going to decide to not hit back, breaking the circle of violence.

Apologies to the people taking the train in the south east of the Netherlands: I decided to take the train today, so naturally everything is cancelled.

It should be illegal for predatory birds to be flying overhead when I have my ultra wide lens on the camera. And I'm too lazy to change it.

Tonight in the #BirthweekRewatch for Jenna Ortega's birthday last Friday: The Fallout. Her best film.

Interesting phone interview by The New York Times with Jenna Ortega, done just before the recent press tour for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. She talks about her life, including becoming a child actress and how you learn to feign maturity early on. Also about why she deleted Twitter a few years ago.

Happy Birthday, Jenna Ortega!

She may be busy filming Wednesday season two in Ireland, but today it is also her 22nd birthday and I feel like celebrating it with a #BirthweekRewatch. A week because a Friday doesn't give enough time to rewatch all I want to see. She made so many great things!

I saw Miller's Girl twice in the cinema, because I liked it so much. Now from the comfort of my own blu-ray player.

There's only a small gap between the trees where the Moon could be seen from my balcony, so I had to set this up quickly. Otherwise I may have had more time to increase the sharpness, maybe with manual focus, maybe with remote control, maybe with faster shutter speeds and higher iso. I did take multiple exposures and some already had out-of-focus leaves smeared over the Moon. It's interesting how quickly heavenly bodies move seen through 400mm. Though I think some lower exposure shots might be better than this one, I still have to check on my pc. This was just cropped on camera and sent to my phone.

So if you tell the Canon EOS R10 auto-focus system to focus on Saturn it's like, ok, I've got it.

Admittedly, it's very vague and it's a tiny crop from the whole photo, it being barely a spec of light, but the photo is taken with a budget camera with a budget lens and it is Saturn and the auto-focus did acquire focus. No telescope involved.

Specs: camera Canon EOS R10, lens RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, at 400mm, F8, 1/20s, ISO 100, tripod, IS off, 10s delay, white balance daylight, manual mode, AF one-shot. Cropped heavily.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Note that Saturn is visible with the naked eye currently during the night due to being close in its rotation and being opposite the sun. This doesn't happen often. The rings should be visible with any kind of magnification, but I had no luck with my binoculars.

I may have repaired my dishwasher by cleaning it. I was operating under the theory that a dishwasher, being a machine that cleans, can't get dirty on the inside, but that turns out not to be true. Years of gunk buildup apparently gets in the way of smooth operation.

Great to see that the large majority of people really enjoyed seeing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, as did I, even in forums like letterboxd where otherwise sour people who don't like films seem to gather.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Jenna's role is bigger than you would expect for a sequel featuring most original characters, but her role didn't completely take over the franchise as it was for Scream. Not yet anyway. Of course I would have wanted the story to be fully about her character, yet it wasn't, it involves everybody. But at the same time, it is sort of clear that without her performance in the way only she can do, the sequel would not have worked. The other cast members have remarked in interviews that the sequel had to wait so long because she still needed to be born, grow up and become an actress, and that's true.

Just seen Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, I really liked this! Enough retro, enough modern, enough bigger than the original. Great performance by Jenna Ortega, I love being a fan of hers, she's creating a great catalogue of films.

It keeps catching me off guard when a semi governmental organisation sends me a message saying that they are starting work now, and I then find out in the same message that this means '2026, maybe'.
