Wow, Twitter now disallows all links to other social media, including Instagram and Facebook, also to non-social media sites like linktree, including just mentioning handles without link or giving a plaintext description of your link or handle.
What is still allowed, is automatic crossposting to Twitter from the other site and including a link like that.
I guess putting your social media handles on your own site, and putting your own site in your bio's, is the way to go.
How they see the difference between automatic crossposting to Twitter with link back and on the other hand posting a link out, I don't know. I also don't know why they include linktree in the ban, as it is just like a personal homepage listing your identities.

@slajeune there is still self-serve verification which i really quite like — though it does require people to visit your profile and is not apparent just from looking at a reply

Molly White (@molly0xfff@hachyderm.io)
remember! you can double-check that my profile belongs to me by looking at the verified links in the bio section.Hachyderm.io
@slajeune To me it seems like there are a couple of purely UI changes that Mastodon could do to help
(1) Never strip out the server part of the user ID. So it would always be @user@server and never just @user which it sometimes is now in the UI.
(2) Add some kind of verified user indicator for everyone who has an associated verified hostname, so that their names would always appear as say
@user@server (✔️ hostname)
remember! you can double-check that my profile belongs to me by looking at the verified links in the bio section.
if you're not familiar with how those work, any time you see a green check on a link in someone's bio you can trust that they have control over that website or page.

This worked for my first account, I moved to my current server (ohai.social), and it has not worked since, despite (duh) updating the link. I checked the html on the referenced page, the verification text appears verbatim. And it worked once, before.
I know this never happens in software, but I cannot help suspecting there is a bug.
but having "something" show up green there is pretty easy to replicate. And if people do not know your home server they might also not know what other URLs are "you".
This is one of the hard problems to solve, I think.
I feel like it might be too easy to impersonate people since it's a bit of a hassle to click on the bio, then go back to the post again after checking. Not only a hassle, but also you need to know about this feature.
My first thought is that maybe accounts with a verified link should get that link, with the green checkmark, added right below their name/username, in a smaller type, on each post?
@forteller it would have to somehow display which link was verified, though. i could change my username/display name to "elon musk" and keep my currently verified sites to get a tickmark, so people would need to have enough info to be able to check that the link makes sense.
truly motivated scammers could also register some other domain like mollywhite.lol and verify that, so there are always vectors to get around it, but at least they have to work for it.
@TTimo if you're just running the out-of-the-box software, you wouldn't be able to verify the links without having control over my domain.
i suppose someone could tweak the mastodon software to show falsified green links, though.
As I understand it, verification is done by *your local instance*, not by the source instance, so the trust in that checkmark lies in the honesty of your instance's admin.
At least the birdsite finally suspended mollyOxfff... Hopefully it stays that way?
It's going to take some time for people to realize usernames in a federated system aren't fully qualified and always need to be seen in a namespaced context. Local instance accounts not showing a full username adds extra confusion/risk. I wonder if there are things that can help with usability, such as allowing tagging of "I've verified this user by looking at their profile" to display specially?
what if, now hear me out, we paid $8 a month to be verified?
/illshowmyselfout
If the real you on hachyderm.io messages me about buying crypto, I have some concerns even after double checking. 😂
But I heard web3isgoinggreatcoin is 🚀🚀🚀
ugh... That's one of the problems in this federated system...
But then again, someone who gets advice from "you" about buying crypto and takes that seriously... There are clearly some additional issues there...

I started watching The Act because the lead character is played by Joey King. I noticed AnnaSophia Robb as well, which is great. I didn't recognise Patricia Arquette and I'm ashamed.
Luckily 'the twist' came in the first episode already rather than at the end of the season, since I suspected something along those lines early on.

Currently the trakt.tv site is down due to a database crash and they are recovering from a backup. They say on twitter it's going slow due to the size of the database. I can imagine that. How slow you can see from the fact that it's already getting to two days.
So this is your reminder, also to myself, to think about your recovery strategy. Just making backups is not enough. Also, backups are a last resort because the data transfer for the restore takes so long. If you want to be online again quickly, redundant/shadow servers and/or snapshots are a must.

This is very frustrating and is lowering my confidence in Trakt. I left #SIMKL for Trakt and still think it's better, but you could get automated monthly backups there.
The fact that they will not say when their last backup data was is very scary. I can't believe they are not making nightly incremental backups. I feel like the other shoe is about to drop. *sigh*
LoL, indeed.
I just saw that the backup is from Nov 7th. Guh!
Of course I had just spent something in the order of 5 hours the week prior to the crash sorting out my watch history. Being new, I was making the mistake of adding prior watched items to my current timeline, vs when it was released. This might be entirely my fault 😜

In Nottingham the whole of The Park estate was still lit by gas lamps last time I was there. I wonder if the residents will be having second thoughts now, given the high price of gas.
depends what it's burning. Flaring off sewer gas may be better than releasing the methane (not sure on the numbers, but I always thought methane was worse than co2) and it would reduce the explosion hazard

Watching Sophie Rundle and Suranne Jones in Gentleman Jack as Ann Walker and Anne Lister, inspired by the diaries of the real Anne Lister. There is no Jack in the series... I'm watching series one on HBO Max since I've already seen series two. It's set in victorian times and shows Anne Lister doing everything male landowners did in these times, including marrying a woman, the other Ann. I find I can not celebrate her too much, since she's also doing all the negative things men of that time and class did. E.g. to me she seems to have no empathy towards servants and women.
#SophieRundle #SuranneJones #GentlemanJack
Sophie Rundle - IMDb
Sophie Rundle. Actress: Peaky Blinders. Sophie Rundle is an English actress. Born on 21 April 1988 to Fiona and Michael Rundle, she has two brothers James and Henry.Sophie Rundle (IMDb)
I feel for the character of Marian Lister, played by the great Gemma Whelan, who is the only one who stands up against her sister but who is also completely ignored.
One of the things I like about the series is that if a certain dialogue between two characters needs to be longer to properly explore the depth, it is longer even if it takes half the episode. Not beholden to the rhythm of editing.
There's so much manipulation and gaslighting by Anne Lister of Ann Walker, it's hard to describe it as a love story between the two women, which on the outside this series may suggest.
Anne is saying literally the things that in other series the sleazy male characters would say.

Just came across this performance on YouTube. This really was the music of my youth. I may have initially at high school started with liking Sting, The Dire Straits, The Smiths, but I quickly saw the light and it became all female (fronted) music for me: The Throwing Muses, The Sundays and definitely Mazzy Star. Here's the latter on a Dutch radio show doing Flowers in December. 26 years ago... I have all their CDs of the time and I also have their more recent albums as well as Hope Sandoval's solo albums from iTunes.

Mazzy Star perform 'Flowers in December' of their 1996 album "Among My Swan" on Dutch music show "2 Meter Sessies". Filmed on November 6, 1996. Subscribe to...YouTube
A rarely well-lit performance. Usually the recordings of their stage appearances were very dark where you could hardly see the people. The albums also didn't have her on the cover and the liner notes photos were very vague. They really wanted to keep her face out of the impression you had of the band and to let the music speak for itself.
There is a thing in the music industry where if a woman is good-looking, especially very good-looking, her music can't be taken seriously.
What I didn't like about yesterday's football world cup match between the Netherlands and Argentina was the ice hockey(*) attitude of it.

Maybe when explaining the fediverse to new people, or outsiders, or journalists, we shouldn't focus on explaining multiple servers so much. What it is, is social media like twitter but run by volunteers. I think that's the important distinguishing part.
Then when they ask how it's organised, who's in charge and stuff like that, who sets the rules, then we can say volunteers can setup their own servers with their own rules. Only when they wonder stuff like that, this server thing becomes interesting. Until then, it's just details.

Progress has been slow implementing FEP-5624. Even slower than the C2S implementation. For those who don't speak techno-babble, FEP-5624 is a specification that brings comment permissions to Mastodon and the rest of the ActivityPub universe. It's about bloody time. We've had them for years. C2S is "Client to Server"; which is a specification for dedicated mobile/desktop apps and their interaction with ActivityPub.
The cool thing about FEP-5624 is that a conversation owner can reject a comment to their conversation container and the commenter can't just send it to all their friends anyway. It will be rejected unless it carries a verifiable stamp of approval from the conversation owner.
What's bad about this spec (and the reason we didn't do it this way to begin with) is that we are forced to interact with spammers instead of just throwing their shit in the garbage and being done with it.
Anyway I thought this was a three day effort but it has turned into three weeks. That's OK. It will get done when it gets done. If you're building ActivityPub or fediverse software and haven't implemented this yet, you better get crackin'. This isn't "optional". Once this is rolled out in Mastodon, ActivityPub comments as we once knew them will cease to exist.

lists do have their place though and the lack of public lists and even the way lists work on Mastodon is one of the pain points I'm having.
There's stuff I don't want to stare at all day, but if I want it within reach I have to follow it and those accounts end up taking over my feed.
Anyone have a solution besides multiple accounts? I just tried creating a list and then muting accounts I don't want dominating my regular feed, but it also muted them in the list too.

Having a bit of an Adventure in yer online travels here ought to be the BEST way to find peeps who might have content U like.

I'm way happier adding my own here, but then, I'm a "found family" kind of person too. ☺️

I wonder if something needs to be implemented on the server side for this to work. I don't see the person with plus sign in either the browser or in Tusky, but I know my instance has yet to be upgraded to v4.1. Perhaps that will give me the hashtag following functionality.
1. This is new to them, give them time.
2. People use social media for different purposes, so what works for you may not work for them.
I have complained of this same issue. I use social media mostly to hear about news as it's happening. On the bird site, I followed major news organizations and a handful of journalists who often broke stories that interested me. So just following someone who posted a comment I appreciate doesn't get me what I want.
@joefry oh for sure ☺️ this post wasn't meant for everyone. And I apologize if the tone offended. It wasn't intended. I was surprised and remarked on that.
As I stated in the op, I'm new here myself (not from the birb, but new nonetheless). I didn't know this toot would go viral, it took on a life of its own. I'm actually on a rather small instance, so that was a surprise.
TLDR: to each their own, but for *social* users, the above might be helpful. Or not, and that's ok too☺️
no apology necessary, but I appreciate that you would bother (obviously not a Twitter user; you wouldn't fit in, most would insult a critical response long before they apologized ).
I really just used your post as an excuse to vent my frustration at how hard it has been to find the right people to follow so that I can leave Twitter once and for all and not feel like I am missing things. But I think it will get there. Just need the major news networks to make the jump.
I follow
@aljazeera
@ap
@GovTrack @NPR_USNews and several local US news sources.
also @jeff has been responsible for bringing many news sources to the fedi so a follow there will probably net you some more sources. Happy hunting
The way Facebook and Twitter push engagement and suggest followers and Gogle Plus didn't may have been why a lot of people saw it as a wasteland. You didn't see any traffic if you didn't look for it.
Mastodon has the local feed to possibly prevent that from happening, but I guess that's not enough for some people.
The thing I'm amazed at is the number of people who came here because they didn't like what Birdsite had suddenly become, then spend all their time recreating their network from there, and bringing over all the negativity and toxicity they claimed they were moving to avoid.
I've unfollowed almost all of the Twitter diaspora I was following because of the crossposters and RTs that they use instead of actually getting to know this platform.

@stuartb I've been noticing a certain ... ragged-edginess ... to the Fediverse over the past few weeks. A bit like the stale beer and cigarette smoke smell of a bar the morning after. Not entirely pleasant.
Been wondering if I should bother mentioning it or not. This as someone who'd not been on Birdsite, though it has some overtones of G+ (of whom I'm seeing a number of familiar faces appear here who'd not been present previously).
I'm also highly aware that individual perceptions of social networks vary tremendously, and that any one person's experience, whilst legitimate of itself, is also not an indication of the whole or of any other person's view. Who and what you follow and/or block has a tremendous impact, none of us see more than a tiny fraction of the whole, though there may be some part of that fraction which is widely shared.
(Mass media are ... complicated.)
Yeah, it's one of those things I've been trying (and often failing) to NOT talk about over the last few weeks - the way the influx of new users has changed this place, not always for the better.
The moderation tools we have at our disposal are far better than anything elsewhere, IMO, but there is also a lot of peer pressure NOT to use them, at least as far as the newcomers are concerned.
As someone following around 1,300 users, it really does surprise me people struggle to populate their timeline 😅
There are just so many fascinating people here!
I get where you are coming from, and I have heard that complaint many times on here. For me though, I never follow others directly through follow lists (on this site or any other) because I don't trust other people's tastes that much 😅 I'd much rather curate my own through interactions. I hope that you do find an easy way to navigate follows that works for you though. My feed is infinitely more fun now that I've found "my people" ☺️
Achievement unlocked: "Born-again pachyderm 🐘 " 😂
I haven't checked follow lists since assembling an initial group to get me up and going in the first few days
"See who commented, or retooted it."
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it's not possible on #Mastodon to see who boosted a post? I thought that was an intentional design decision to discourage clout-chasing.
Thank you for pointing that out. I have worded it poorly. When looking at people's interactions with a toot, those who comment leave crumbs. If I click their page, I can see what they boosted. Those boosts lead to more crumbs. But I believe that you are technically correct that one cannot click on a given toot and see who boosted/retooted it from the op itself.
Another trick is to switch to a server that looks interesting, and scroll through the latest posts there.
I started trying to follow the folks I followed on the birdsite and in a couple of weeks ended up with a much more interesting follow list.
I found some in here with whom I had previously spoken on the birdsite. But, yes, you are right, it's the random post scrolling down that catches my eye, and I hit Follow and try to engage with them - compliment a photograph, laugh at a joke, discuss an issue.
I really feel that the world is your oyster on Mastodon and here be pearls. Not the famous people, just those who look at this community and want to build on it.

Totally agree. I feel comfortable here, and actions after RaspPi spy cop just cemented this is the right place for me.
It's taking time to adjust that I can chat more here, without creating aggravation. Almost anything at the other place would create a scene of angry users.
Interesting observation. I opened a twitter account in 2009, followed about 600 people, and then I didn't use it again as my feed was full of stuff.
I've just joined Mastodon, and I'm learning the craft of ensuring my follow list is carefully curated as that defines my experience here. It has taken me a while to realise that and be super picky on who to follow rather than just follow anyone. If I am following someone, there is a reason why.
I started that way here too, but I found that some of my most interesting connections have come not from those I directly followed initially, but rather those they responded to or boosted. Also, it's been super easy to mute or unfollow people, and no one complains. They are all too busy looking at all the new any shiny posts to miss me commenting on their stuff 😅
I wish for you, the curated feed of your dreams. It's not hard to do here. The people are fantastic.
