Watching Pixie with Olivia Cooke on Film1 since it just came out there. So far it's quite funny and I really like what she's doing with the character Pixie so far. Seemingly she stumbles into events with two boys she knows doing a little crime around Ireland, but the little crime involves a million dollars of drugs and several murders and she turns out to be more the criminal mastermind type than the girl tagging along.

Turns out that if someone uses the move-account function on Mastodon, their Mastodon followers get transferred nicely, but if you're a follower on Friendica and/or Pleroma you have to re-follow them yourself.

(I'm sorry for the multiple follow requests from multiple accounts...)

In 1989 I was 19 years old, so you'd think that musically this would totally be my era and that the 1989 #AlbumBowl would totally be my music. But none of them.

I think there's a combination of music being even more regionally separated (marketing-wise) than films and the main problem that I just have a weird taste in music.

I'm now wondering where I can find a list of albums by year to check what I listened too.

Well, there's this list, but it's still very American:

From that I only get Throwing Muses, 10,000 Maniacs, The The, The Sugarcubes and of all things, Transvision Vamp. Yes, I own up to that.

An extremely smart person I once spoke with said something that I always thought was very intriguing. Essentially she pointed out that the way the human brain works when a man and a woman meet is counterproductive: the more you like someone, the more nervous you are and the worse the impression you make. (My words, I guess she put it better.) I've thought about that a lot. I think that's why some people always end up with the wrong partner: people are attracted to confidence and the confident person who talks to you is not the one who cares the most about what you think about them.

Using the #Pinafore frontend (pinafore.social/) on top of #Friendica works quite nicely. Shows me some aspects of the timeline I was missing (like replies people post as a flat timeline) but I'm missing some aspects I'm used to seeing (like an indication that something is a reply, or who reshared it, or link previews). I'll be switching between the two for a bit.

Now one of my all time favourite films, though I suspect quite unknown, Angel Baby with Jacqueline McKenzie. It's an Australian film from 1995 and is about mental health, love, self-determination, and is extremely well acted. I mean, goosebumps.

The film asks uncomfortable questions about how much someone is allowed to make medical decisions about themselves.

The story and the acting are central here, as films should be. Totally a classic.

Predictive text and autocorrect are getting in the way more often than not while writing the normalest of words, but names like Ivana Baquero and Daniela Bobadilla roll out of it without problems and only a few taps. I've trained it well.

I'm watching Daniela Bobadilla in Face 2 Face, a film from 2016 in which she plays the lead. I found it's available on Amazon Prime Video. Recently she filmed another film, The Happy Camper, of which she shared some behind the scenes things on her Instagram. That seemed a very joyful experience, she was very much a happy camper filming that.

A very interesting film that is mainly an online video conversation between the two main characters. They knew each other from when they were little kids playing in a tree house, but now they live far apart and at the end of their high school years he's lonely without any friends and she seems to be a party girl who got it all together. Stuff happens and I may have suspected these exact things to happen, but that doesn't take away from this film being a great watch with great performances.

The film has comments on social media when she helps him setup a Facebook page and get friends ('acquaintances') and when she posts beach photos while grounded ('the internet doesn't know I'm grounded'). I understand it was very interesting for the actors to film the dialogue as a video call, quite different from other films.

Now playing a CD virtually nobody has, not even Tidal or Spotify have it: Alex Parks with "Honesty", from 2005. I have no idea why everybody has forgotten about her, she's so good.

This is her second album. Her first did reasonably well, she was also known from tv in the UK, but this second slipped everyone by.

She was on one of these early talent shows when you could still find some talent. I think at some point one of the teachers / trainers when first hearing her sing let slip 'why are you here? You don't need this'. Then in the final the final two contestants sang together with a famous UK singer, who after the song, live on tv, said it was such an honour to have sung this duet with Alex, until the presenter reminded him he had been singing with the other contestant too. 'Just vote for Alex' he said according to wikipedia, but I don't remember that bit. Anyway, she was so much better than all the others, it was embarrassing...

Of course I moved on to Belly's "star", an album I really totally love. From 1993.

Though I must admit I never really understand lyrics and am guessing. In the case of Tanya Donelly I've heard it's not really my fault. A lot of her lyrics sound like they're metaphors for some deep stuff, but are instead just things that happened to her that no one could have known.

In some song she describes shiny lights from under the water. What does that mean? Actually, as a kid she did an experiment with coloured (water proof) Christmas lights in the bathtub and liked the way it looked.

"this little squirrel I used to be slammed her bike down the stairs they put silver where her teeth had been baby silver-tooth she grins and grins"? Yes, real event. Indoor bicycle accident as a little girl where she broke her teeth.

Listening to one of my CDs: Throwing Muses with "house tornado" / "the fat skier". Really music from my youth, I love how they don't try to make it accessible, my type of stuff. Why does it have two titles, I can't remember that. And why is only the first title on Tidal? I have six more songs under the second title...

These 4AD catalogue numbers are so low, and I have so many of those CDs, I must own a not-insignificant section of their music. Other labels have CD numbers like 4799436548743, while this is number 802.

Is 4AD for music what A24 is for films? I don't know about these things. But strikes me that they both release things that are generally considered good and that nobody has ever heard of.

I wish the tone-policers stayed on the other side, or inhabited their own island. That's not a nice part of the current influx.

Now watching High Seas (Alta Mar) with Ivana Baquero. She impressed everybody with a standout performance in Pan's Labyrinth when she was tiny, and later as an adult the few people that saw The Shannara Chronicles were also impressed by her cool and strong portrayal, at least I was. This series on Netflix is in Spanish, so subtitles it is.

A family boards a massive cruiseschip in the post-war forties to celebrate a wedding at sea, but it looks like nobody is really looking forward to the happy occasion and all of them have a secret agenda. I already like Ivana's character, who's a smart, independent woman.

I'm having a bit of withdrawal symptoms and I really need to see new Jenna Ortega and Dafne Keen content. Seen much already, some very recently, but so it is with these things. Not to fret, things are on their way: Jenna has finished season one of Wednesday and we're just waiting for Netflix to flip the switch. She's also filming Finestkind as we speak. Dafne has finished season three of His Dark Materials ages ago, don't know what HBO is waiting for. In the meantime we have to do with small appearances in Spanish music videos by a musician friend of hers.

What to do if you're on mobile and there's a function in the website you're browsing that's accessed by 'just hovering over it'? Well, I don't really know, but some things that help me sometimes:


  • If you have an s-pen, you can hover with that
  • long tap the item so the context menu pops up. Click outside it so it disappears, the hover popup may also have popped up behind it and still be there. (Works sometimes in Friendica)
  • in some circumstances you can tap just long enough for it not to be a click (short tap), but short enough not to be a right click (long tap), but it still brings up the hover popup. (Works sometimes in Pleroma)
  • if the thing you wanted to see was alt text (image description), in some browsers like Chrome it will show on top of the context menu. So long tap... If the text is not fully shown, tap on the text and it expands.

Why do IDEs insist on having a different idea about what's on my disk than my disk does?

Continuing the rewatch of Alexa Nisenson (imdb.com/name/nm6835961/) centered episodes of "Fear The Walking Dead", with her choice for season five: "Skidmark" (5x04). It's the episode where her character seems to be in quite some danger which she needs to face alone, but in real Charlie style she's very cool about it. Also yet again an episode where Alexa shows she can have a real connection with another actor and spark of each other. I don't mean the cat, though the cat has a starring role too...

Rewatched some other standout episodes as well (Ner Tamid, Close Your Eyes, In Dreams). That's jumping through the seasons a bit, but all amazing acting performances by Alexa Nisenson, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Karen David. They sure can occasionally write material in which people can shine. Goosebumps inducing all around.

To play a video on your tv, first open the app on your tv, then select your profile, find your series, select the season, find the episode, click ok to play it. Then repeat all previous steps because the app crashed. Always the first time you use it, without fail. Open the app again, select profile, series, season, episode, click ok. This second time it never crashes. Now click ok again to skip the advert. Yes advert, despite paying for a subscription, but you can skip it. Now your episode plays. Happy watching!

Tomorrow's King's Day in my country, when the King has his birthday and has to work and we all celebrate that fact by having a holiday. (Obviously the people in the hospitality industry don't have a holiday because do they ever)

#FediTips #feditip There's more to the fediverse than #Mastodon. E.g. I post this from #Friendica, which allows longer posts with text formatting and pictures. It all connects anyway. (It also has editing, forums, side-channels, connectors with various mainstream services)

You also don't need to 'find a community that suits you', despite what many are saying, if you're not into that type of thing. You can, with some tech knowhow, self host a server like I do and have your very own place to post from. No-one setting quota, no-one setting rules you don't agree with. Or you can just join a big general server and post from there, if you want.

Finding posts about your interests is tricky however, since hashtags don't really work as you'd think. One way is to find people in the list of the trunk project or in the directories provided by your Mastodon or Friendica server.

People in the US and the UK can now see the Charlie-centric episode Mourning Cloak of Fear The Walking Dead (7x10). For me that's going to be another couple of months if not a year. In yesterday's Insta-takeover Alexa Nisenson (who plays Charlie) revealed what her favourite episodes of each season were to film: 7x10 Mourning Cloak, 6x07 Damage From The Inside, 5x04 Skidmark and 4x10 Close Your Eyes. I've watched the latter many times already and can concur that it's a great episode, as are the others she mentions, though 5x12 Ner Tamid is a classic too.

Since I can't watch season 7, but want to mark the occasion anyway, I'll be rewatching these other episodes. In reverse order. Starting with session 6's Damage From The Inside.

Reply-spam is way more of an issue than I realised. If your federated timeline of your selfhosted server is public, like I think it is for PeerTube, any link spam replies to external videos just get hosted by you while on e.g. Wordpress these would have ended up in the moderation queue. At least I have disabled search engine indexing of external videos on my PeerTube, and made the federated timelines non-public on Friendica and Pleroma, so they don't get any seo satisfaction.
