Doing the final one Wednesday per Wednesday, episode 8 of my fourth run-through. Getting ready for the pre-premiere of Scream VI later this evening. It's a Jenna Ortega day...

Scream VI is released in Dutch cinemas tomorrow, Thursday 9 March. In the US it is released Friday.

So interesting how she has this 'does not compute' reaction when she turns out to be wrong about something. And she is wrong about things surprisingly often for someone coming across as so confident.

I've been watching the Scream films to get ready for the release of Scream VI this week. Now I'm rewatching the fifth film, Scream, the one with Jenna Ortega, from my 4k disc. Last year I saw this film in the cinema and it was my first experience seeing Jenna on the big screen, which is even more impressive.

Of course I'm going to see Scream VI in the cinema too! The US release is this Friday, the Dutch release is one day earlier but our prerelease is this Wednesday already.

Jenna Ortega proves that a horror slasher can also have spot on acting, not just in the attack scenes but also in some heartfelt dialogue.

Still don't understand why the noncommercial public tv channels in the Netherlands have advertisements, quite a lot of them, with the commercial channels just having even more of those.

From a little ago, but several people shared this today, a blog at the FTC (US government thing to regulate businesses and in this case advertising claims), reiterating that just claiming a product has AI is not allowed without making sure of some things. I especially appreciate the risk/responsibility thing: AI tends to be vague and poorly understood, but as a business you are responsible for your product so you better understand how it works, how it gets to its output and how you can test it.

The You Netflix account posting these two Ellie and Nadia videos side by side... I love both actresses, and characters, and had already noticed their similarities in the makeup of the show (the wise young person that fascinates Joe, who he wants to protect, but who is fundamentally a reflection of the real world rather than Joe's strange business). Further parallels: both Jenna and Amy-Leigh became famous from a tv series with a lot of kids living in a house where there were two adults, but the stories were about the kids (Stuck in the Middle and Tracy Beaker Returns/The Dumping Ground).

You see that Joe is getting older because in season four he needs to take notes to remember it all.

I'm giving the miniseries Keep Breathing on Netflix a chance, since it has Melissa Barrera in it as lead and I quite liked her yesterday on the cinema screen in Bed Rest.
#MelissaBarrera #KeepBreathing
in reply to Gidi Kroon

I really liked Keep Breathing. Melissa Barrera is really good as basically the only character this series follows. She is Liv, a woman who survives a plane crash in the middle of nowhere, then has to keep surviving.

I like that each episode is a bit different. I also like that Liv is not portrayed as some sort of survival expert or that the risks and problems are played down. Liv is just a resourceful, determined woman but like any city person she doesn't know what she's doing out there.

What makes the series different from just that idea of survival, is that they keep tying it back to life before the accident and to her youth.
#MelissaBarrera #KeepBreathing

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Keep Breathing (miniseries) spoilers

In one of the flashbacks to Liv's youth, there was essentially a mini-survival that prepared her for being lost alone in the forest. Her mother was supposed to pick her up from a girl scouts event, but of course didn't, so after a long wait she had to try to walk home, navigate the jungle that is New York without any preparation or help. After a long walk, she reaches home and falls into the arms of her father. It's this memory that drives her as an adult in the forests of Canada and tells her she can do it.

She also finds that what she learned in the girl scouts is not as easily applicable in reality as she thought at the time. E.g. how are you going to magnetise a compass needle, did you bring your big magnet?

Just back from watching Bed Rest in the cinema. Maybe I shouldn't have seen this at midnight, it's seriously scary. Melissa Barrera is really good as the lead, a pregnant woman who has to stay in bed and finds it a mental challenge. Melissa also produces the film.

A comparison with Rosemary's Baby is unavoidable with such a synopsis, but I like the psychology of the woman better in this one. She's highly capable, strong, independent, and reasons for her state of mind go further than being pregnant. It's just the character of the man I didn't like.

That first scene, where she quickly sorted out the renovation her husband was stressing about, immediately set the tone. His non-acknowledgment of that, too.

Next week, it's Melissa again, but together with Jenna Ortega, as Sam and Tara respectively in Scream VI.

There will be a Thundermans film, it has just been announced. Kira Kosarin is executive producing and it will be on Paramount+.

Jenna Ortega never loses her cool while eating increasingly hot spicy wings and while being interviewed. She talks about Wednesday, Tim Burton, Scream, horror in general, writing essays, teen stereotypes in scripts, etc.

I'm at episode 7 of 8 of my one Wednesday per Wednesday rewatch, which I think is my fourth run through of the series. I guess next week will be a double dose of Jenna Ortega.

Everytime at the beginning of the week, Netflix mails me the 'Don't forget to finish Wednesday!' email and I'm like, is it Wednesday already? No? Chill.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

This is the episode that opens with the iconic image of Wednesday under the umbrella in the rain, which was used much in the promotion.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

I love how Jenna makes all of Wednesday's movements so perfect. Not just the eyes, which is what maybe stands out most, but also down to the hand movements that are confident and deliberate but also careful and measured. When Wednesday puts something down, or rings a bell, it's very smooth. It's a really interesting thing once you see it.

New Scream VI trailer! With cast quotes.

The film comes out 9 March in my country (10 March in the US), but in many cities here there's a prerelease showing on Wednesday 8 March. Check your listings!

Scream VI is the follow up to last year's Scream, which was actually number 5, and Jenna Ortega plays one of the main characters, Tara Carpenter.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

My main question I'm looking for this film to answer when I see it next week, but which I won't be able to talk about, is whether I will need to look out for the seventh installment next year, i.e. does Tara survive?

Miranda Cosgrove will be in a new film! It will be on Netflix and is called Mother of the Bride. I'm assuming she'll be the bride rather than the mother.

Happy Birthday Georgina Leonidas!

Yeah, Georgina is born on double the date of her older sister, Stephanie, which makes it easy to remember for me. And I have a calendar on my phone.

I like to rewatch something to mark the occasion, but not much of hers is available on streaming services or on dvd. If you ignore a major film series about a boy wizard that is. So YouTube clips it is. I randomly chose this Basil Brush episode from the playlist I made last year.

Rewatching New Tricks episode 6x03 "Fresh Starts" for the Birthday Rewatch for Georgina Leonidas. In this episode she has a significant guest role which she of course performs rather brilliantly.
#GeorginaLeonidas #NewTricks
in reply to Gidi Kroon

I've seen most episodes of this twelve year long series and I think this episode may be the best one. Intricate story, more difficult themes than normally, very emotional. And as I said, Georgina is really great in it.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Episode 6 Jessica Fox comes in as Enid Nightshade. Instantly quite a character.

It has been my theory (without knowing the books) that originally the idea was to have Mildred go up against Ethel as the standard good vs evil battle. But because Mildred is 'the worst witch', and Ethel some sort of perfect witch with lots of talent, these stories were not going to work very well if magic was to be used in the battles. In comes Enid, also without morals, also very good at spells, but she takes an instant dislike to Ethel so she joins Mildred just to upset her.

Teaching the kids puffication without also teaching them repuffication is quite irresponsible.

@Matthias Bürcher I tried adding the magic words to my profile, and as far as I can check two of them are there (searchable and tootfinder), but https://www.tootfinder.ch/ says that I don't have the magic word in my profile. I checked some profiles of others but I can't find what I'm doing wrong.

Do you have any advice, if you have time? Thanks!

in reply to Gidi Kroon

The fallback to HTML does not work, because Friendica seems to use other URLs than Mastodon. This URL goes nowhere friendica.gidikroon.eu/users/g…
in reply to Matthias Bürcher

@Matthias Bürcher Ah, that explains it. I thought the webfinger lookup would be used. The feed urls in Friendica are also different from Mastodon, even if the profile lookup would succeed. I had also tried my Pleroma account which gave the same message. Anyway, thanks for looking into it!

(Fyi, the Friendica profile url may be like https://friendica.gidikroon.eu/profile/gidi/profile or without the final /profile and the Pleroma one https://pleroma.gidikroon.eu/users/Gidi. My feed app discovers the Friendica feed url as https://friendica.gidikroon.eu/dfrn_poll/gidi (or https://friendica.gidikroon.eu/feed/gidi/) and for Pleroma https://pleroma.gidikroon.eu/users/gidi/feed.atom.)

in reply to Gidi Kroon

When did you try with Pleroma? I had another user this morning and could solve his problem.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

ok i see the problem. The bio is too long for Pleroma. Acess on the API returns "Interrnal Server error". Access on HTML returns only an abbreviated version of the bio which stops at "nothing wrong with..." because Pleroma limits the bio in the header to about 200 char. The rest will be displayed only with Javasrript in the app, so tootfinder cannot see it.
in reply to Matthias Bürcher

@Matthias Bürcher ok, thank you for checking. I will experiment with different ways around it later, but your explanation is clear.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Thank you for the details. I have created an issue in the wiki so I can try to make it work once I have some more time.

Upcoming Jenna Ortega appearances: she will present (and hopefully receive) an award at this Sunday's SAG awards and on 11 March she will host SNL.

Rewatching season one of Jessica Jones. I like the idea of the reluctant superhero.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's one of my favourite opening sequences of a tv show, it looks so beautiful.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's weird how I have no memory at all about the season's later episodes, it's like seeing them for the first time.

While I'm watching Nicole Muñoz, now for something completely different: Center Stage: On Pointe.
#NicoleMuñoz #CenterStageOnPointe
in reply to Gidi Kroon

I think that for most dances and dance moves we can see that it's really her and that she's really properly dancing. I had no idea she could do that. A stunt double is credited, so I guess that one is doing some of the lifts and falls.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Center Stage: On Pointe

A ballet company auditions modern dancers to expand their repertoire and Bella, played by Nicole Muñoz, is a really good modern dancer. The problem arises when they still want them to learn ballet. There's a weeks long process where they train and live together. Toxic competition and friendship will collide.

Initially the film suggests it may be about low confidence due to perceived weight issues but luckily it's not about that.

Nicole is really good as the girl who needs to find her confidence to perform her best. While remaining true to herself in her relationships with other people.
#NicoleMuñoz #CenterStageOnPointe

It's daytime and still light outside, so I'll dare to watch this horror film. I don't know anything about it, except it has Nicole Muñoz in it. She's a Canadian actress I know from the tv series Defiance. And that the film is called Pyewacket.
#NicoleMuñoz #Pyewacket #NowWatching
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Pyewacket
Nightmarishly scary. I like that it shows the emotions that drive someone to use black magic, as well as the despair over the consequences. Nicole Muñoz is really good as the lead character Leah and she elevates this film a step above other occult horror films.
#Pyewacket #NicoleMuñoz
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Pyewacket
Funny how in the making-of interview, Nicole semi-seriously mentions how Leah could have done the ritual better.

One wall is now minus two layers of wallpaper, one more to go. And three other walls. Time for a film, coffee and cake.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Just noticed that all the wallpaper is now in my hair. Best deal with that first before I spread it around too much.

'We need groups on the fediverse', they say. 'When do we finally get groups'.

See screenshot. I am now on four different implementations of groups. Please stop thinking there are no groups on the fediverse.

My usage flow on the fediverse: encounter someone on Friendica, follow them, copy their address, paste it in Pleroma, follow them there, continue reading on Friendica, encounter a poll (not yet supported by Friendica), copy its address to Pleroma, vote there, see a notification in Pleroma that someone's account has migrated, which Friendica doesn't support, copy their address into Friendica, follow them there.

That's why you usually get two follows from me and why locked accounts see an extra request from me a few days after they migrated.

There's some really bad wallpaper in one of the rooms, so I decided to pull at a small corner to see how easily it came off before applying water, steam or whatever. Quite easily.

Rewatching His Dark Materials series 3 from my blu-ray that arrived a few days ago. At episode two, so bear on a boat. Lyra is still asleep, but fortunately Dafne Keen has actual acting to do besides lying in bed, also these early episodes.

His Dark Materials series 3 spoilers

The role of the serpent is so weird: wander about for over a season, tell a story and go home. Still sort of beautiful in the end though.

I'm now at the bench, i.e. near the end of the rewatch.

Maybe I should print out some blue check marks and mail them to people who order them. I don't know why, but they seem to be all the rage despite having no further function beyond being a blue check mark.

Watching Luna to celebrate the birthday of Stephanie Leonidas. This film is made by some of the same people that made Mirrormask, which is another great candidate for the birthday rewatch. I chose this one because I can now finally watch my US disc in a player that accepts the region coding. If I remember a theme was a couple mourning after the death of a child, but the events are fantastical and may be based on wishful thinking.

I think the overall word for this film is beautiful. Stephanie is superb.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Seven years it took between filming this film (2007) and it's eventual release (2014). And us in the rest of the world are still waiting (it's only out in the US and UK I think).

I guess there's a certain set of films you're supposed to know to 'know about films' and there's the set of films I've seen and there's no overlap. Personally, I think the 'film gurus' miss out. But it does mean I'm often on my own talking about them.

There's this site that only shows blurred photos of people until you pay. Joke's on them, this matches my eyesight.
