A long time ago there were books about children with magical abilities that went to a school where they could further learn their crafts. These stories were filmed so we can see them on our screens.
I'm talking about The Worst Witch of course, based on the books by Jill Murphy. What else do you think I was talking about?
The tv series is where I first saw Felicity Jones and Jessica Fox, both still kids at the time, which I thought were both uber talented. In the case of Felicity I've been proven right, she is an internationally famous actress now and has an Oscar nomination. But I stand by Jessica too.
Felicity is only in series one of the three, afterwards her character does a 'witch-over' on herself. In the sequel Weirdsister College, on my discs it's The Worst Witch series four, she's back ('the witch-over didn't stick, don't mention it to her'). Jessica comes in later in series 1 and stays for 2 and 3.
I also really liked the stories when I saw them ages ago on Belgian tv.
Now rewatching all of it from my DVDs. The original series, not the more recent remake.

It has been my theory (without knowing the books) that originally the idea was to have Mildred go up against Ethel as the standard good vs evil battle. But because Mildred is 'the worst witch', and Ethel some sort of perfect witch with lots of talent, these stories were not going to work very well if magic was to be used in the battles. In comes Enid, also without morals, also very good at spells, but she takes an instant dislike to Ethel so she joins Mildred just to upset her.
