I have the boxset of The Shannara Chronicles, another one of these series they keep disappearing from the streaming services. It features two absolutely great actresses: Ivana Baquero and (from season two) Melise. Both are utterly cool here, which is sort of what this show is about.

Ivana was the little girl in Pan's Labyrinth and also as an adult she impresses a lot. Melise is an actress and singer who previously played 'rock chick' Lucy Stone in Big Time Rush. I was playing one of her songs just today.

Starting my rewatch of the show now.

From the makers of Wednesday apparently, I didn't know that. It does mean that getting a premonition is signalled by the actress suddenly and violently looking up to the sky.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It is set in a time after our time, when nature has mostly recovered from us and everything is overgrown with lush forests. The story starts in the Kingdom of the Elves and with a premonition showing the end of times and the destruction of all life.

It takes a while to establish the main characters, in fact you're introduced first to some Elf characters that will not be that important in the long run.

A long time ago I saw the tv series Roswell and loved it. I started watching it for Shiri Appleby, who I knew from Xena, but would probably have watched it anyway. Shiri is nowadays besides a great actress also a great director. She was amazing in Unreal and the episodes she directed were the best.

Starting a rewatch of Roswell now from my boxset.

I'm Liz Parker and five days ago I died. After that, things got really weird.

Love story openings like that.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's nice to see what a really great lead actress brings to a series. She not only plays her role very well, but she also captures the audience and sets the tone. I think she makes Roswell the warm and interesting show it is.

That her role would be the lead wasn't that obvious. The series is about aliens hiding in Roswell and she is just a human. But I think it works out well, to have human Liz as point of view.

Just watched Jodie Foster, Nastassja Kinski and Amanda Plummer in Hotel New Hampshire; so great having these three talented actresses in the same film!

Going to see Emilia Clarke. Not in person, she will be on a big screen. The Pod Generation is finally arrived in my country (NL). Release this Thursday, but prereleases all over the country this week.

Looked great in the trailer and it's always great to see Emilia.

So many people in reviews annoyed that the film raises questions but doesn't provide answers and I'm annoyed at those reviews. Firstly, films don't have to provide answers, you can think for yourself, after the film explored the concepts. Secondly, I think this film does provide the answers, just not in an obviously hammered home way where the plot literally gives the answer, but the conclusions the film makers draw are clear from how it affects the characters. I didn't know film watchers had gotten so lazy.

Also there's a mid-credits scene about the big tech aspect, so don't go running to the toilet just yet.

The limbo state packages reach after you order them is still weird. The shop says the package service has picked them up. The package service says the shop still has them. This is an unavoidable state within the delivery process and can take days of no change, even for next day delivery.

More India Eisley, now in Kite. I know nothing of the anime it's supposedly based on...
#IndiaEisley #Kite #NowWatching
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Based on the kind of story you'd expect this film to be cheesier than it is. Instead, India Eisley acts her character Sawa so realistically, it's as if a real-life young assassin with amnesia has stumbled upon the film set and is trying to make sense of the clues she finds, hell-bent on exacting revenge on things in her past she can't quite remember. Some other bits of the film may live up more to the original expectation.

I disagree with the blu-ray cover image's suggestion that she doesn't play the lead character. But big names and all that.

uspol, fascism, trump

Quote shared in an attempt to add a content warning. This is an interesting, and scary, read. Explaining why fascists think they are democratic.

Trump can claim he’s for democracy, and he can accuse others of fascism, but it’s been his own rhetoric and beliefs that put him in a fairly textbook fascist category.

Last weekend Jenna Ortega's film Miller's Girl had its festival premiere and 26 January it will have its theatrical release. Good news is that we in the Netherlands don't need to wait too long this time: Thursday 14 March it will be in our cinemas!

Absolutely great acting and a really interesting film too. So many things to think about...

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Such mixed reactions to this film when I check afterwards what people write about it. Really a love it or hate it thing. The difference seems to be that if you expect this teenage horror to be a teenage horror, you'll be disappointed since it's a psychological film with great cinematography instead.

Jenna Ortega has been nominated in the People's Choice Awards, as 'The Female Movie Star' and 'The Drama Movie Star'. Both for her role as Tara Carpenter in Scream VI.

As people we can vote for our choice once per day per category. They have many (many) more categories...

I've read news that despite being on streaming, Wednesday is going to be released on disc as well. Season one will apparently come out on 26 March.

The Silent Witness episodes (Flight part 1 and 2, 19x03 and 19x04) where Abigail Hardingham guest starred were on tv again recently and I'm watching them now. I am again reminded what a brilliant actress she is despite being hardly known. Unlike other guest roles in this series, hers is really a leading role and she's taking us through all the twists and turns of the story.

May I also recommend her in Nina Forever, a horror film with a difference.

I'm doing a rewatch in honour of Dafne Keen's birthday last Thursday. The Acolyte is not out yet and Ana is still not showing anywhere on streaming in my country, so it'll be an episode of His Dark Materials. Episode 1x05 is the one I like to watch. Where Dafne shows that Lyra being brave doesn't mean she isn't scared.

#DafneKeen #BirthdayRewatch #HisDarkMaterials

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Dafne Keen is such a good actress. A lead character can be made to look cool by writing cool things for them to do, but that's not the trick here. With Dafne's Lyra it's pure acting. It's interacting with other characters, the emotions, the frustration, the drive. And I'm also noticing that she has chemistry with every character she interacts with, not just Will but also Lee, Ma Costa and the leaders of the Gyptians.

Today's Dafne Keen's birthday. Happy Birthday Dafne!

Normally I celebrate by (re)watching something, but due to family things today and work things tomorrow, that's going to be Saturday.

Corina Bradley will be in a new tv series called Hotel Cocaine. She plays the character Valeria. It will be released this summer.

Universal, and then it's a picture of the Earth, and not the universe.

Watching Killjoys season one because of course I ordered this missing blu-ray. Why only have S2-5? I'm starting to notice that they are not afraid to show really bright sunbeams and large lens flares. Sometimes most of a scene is almost completely washed out by bright sunlight. This really helps in creating the impression of being on another world. So many sci-fi shows are just dark.
#Killjoys

Friendica has a button to enter an abstract since the new release! 😃 That is such a time-saver...

So, finally ready to hibernate until next year. What do you mean that's in under 30 hours? 😰

Setting up the facial recognition with a tooth brush in my mouth as some kind of second factor.

Upgraded to Friendica 2023.12, so it's all circles and groups now.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

And channels. I think I can really use this channels feature... Will need to set up some personalised one though.

Rewatching Killjoys but starting at season 2, because that is the disc I have and streaming fails yet again. (How can there be so many streaming services and yet when you want to see something none of them have it?)

Anyway, great to see Hannah John-Kamen, even though I don't get to see her introduce her character. And of course Stephanie Leonidas because she's the reason I have this disc.

Killjoys 2x01

In this episode there's not just one but two female characters being ultra cool with Hannah John-Kamen and Stephanie Leonidas fighting side by side.

As I understand it Stephanie had to do all stunts herself as the prosthetic gun arm only fitted her and not the double.

Interesting how another server that identifies itself with the User Agent "facebookexternalua" has IPv6 addresses with ":face:" in it, like "2a03:2880:3ff:1::face:b00c". Not so nice that it seems broken and keeps requesting the same url over and over again around 10 times per second since yesterday, while circumventing caching. It is for now blocked.

(edit: I didn't even notice the "b00c" for "book"...)

Doing the thing that I do: watching a film I know nothing about with an actress I hardly know anything about. Sasha Lane was with Chloë Grace Moretz in the film The Miseducation of Cameron Post and she seemed interesting enough to watch American Honey in which she is the lead, or at least front and center on the poster.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's more of an atmospheric film than a story and I like that. It's just not clear from the beginning that it's going to be like that, so for a while I was waiting for something to start happening. Many independent things happen, but none are really what the film is about.

The atmosphere is not unlike Mouth by Mouth, but that one is a bit more extreme.

I really liked the performance by Sasha Lane. She plays someone who never really fits in, but who also doesn't know where she would fit in. Someone who had she been born in a different family, would have led a totally different life.

I didn't realise before how much I dislike the brainwashing lyrics of sexually explicit rap music.

All great inventions start with a lack of cheese.

This first Wallace & Gromit is so old it's in 4x3. They run out of cheese and naturally plan a trip to the Moon on A Grand Day Out.

Happy Birthday, Lindsay!

Lindsay Armaou has her birthday today and it would be obvious to play her songs as celebration. She was in B*Witched as well as Clayton, and is again in B*Witched now they're performing and recording again. But I don't like to be obvious.

So for the Birthday Rewatch I'm rewatching the film (Two Days in) The Smoke, which is one of her acting jobs. It's a very long time ago I saw this film, so it's about time. 'The Smoke' is a nickname for the city of London.

Lindsay is also singing (and wrote words and music of) the song playing over the credits No smoke without fire.

I'm going to do some mixed-up rewatch to see the combined talents of Jenna Ortega and Amy-Leigh Hickman by jumping between the second and fourth seasons of You. Double the brilliance. I'll be doing episodes 2x08, 4x08, 2x09, 4x09, 2x10 and 4x10.

You 2x09 Ellie report (spoilers)
Ellie walks in on Joe and Love who have met up the morning after the events of Forty's process. She is still looking for her sister Delilah and proceeds to spend the day cooking with Love. She tells Love about how she came to live with her sister after her father died. Later in the episode she has the arguably most heartfelt moment of the series where she has her 'what's wrong with me' outburst in the kitchen, when she believes her sister has left her.

You 4x09 Nadia report (spoilers)
Nadia is talking to Marianne about the plan to get her out without involving the police, while Joe walks in and she needs to hide around the corner. This is when a panic-stricken Nadia properly sees the madness of her professor, indicating the reality closing in on Joe. When he's gone Nadia and Marianne agree that the only way is for Joe to die. When Nadia is later rushing back after sourcing the drugs and knife needed, she gets into a mishap at the underground access gates and is taken to the police station. Once outside, she receives the remainder of the drugs she needs for plan b that Marianne has set in motion due to the delay. Meanwhile, she has to admit to her 'boyfriend' that she doesn't consider him her boyfriend as this is not the kind of conversation that you can postpone because you're in a hurry.

It's happening again: the film account for Finestkind has been promoting since forever that its release on Paramount+ is 15 December. That's now, so I check: nothing. Loads of other people in the comments having the same problem. It looks like it may have been a release in the US only. They literally never mentioned that. Which also means that there is no word whatsoever if I am ever going to get to see it here.
#Finestkind #JennaOrtega
in reply to Gidi Kroon

I'm so done with the entertainment industry thinking that the US equals the world. And with regional release dates.

I know that the argument is that the local distributors can have their own campaigns and social media accounts promoting their local release. But they never do. Because the US accounts always present themselves as the overall global one, representing the film to the world, until they don't.

Bridgerton season three (part one) will be on Netflix 16 May, with part two the next month on 13 June. Looks like Claudia Jessie is back.

I'm excited for this film: Jenna Ortega's Miller's Girl will be in theatres 26 January, after being in a film festival earlier that month. Sounds like a difficult story that can fully use (and showcase) her acting talents.

Tomorrow on BBC Two is going to be the repeat of last week's episode of Hannah Fry's The Secret Genius of Modern Life, that I missed. In this series she explores the amazing components and inventions that make up mundane everyday objects. I've just watched the episode about the microwave. Not only is there obvious science in generating the waves, but also using a turntable needed to be invented. Tomorrow will be about headphones. The new episode this week, Thursday, is about lifts.
