HG = Hit Girl

Yes, I'm watching Kick Ass 2 again since Chloë Grace Moretz is so great in it. I think I can tell she does a lot of her own stunts too. This film focuses a lot more on her character and less on Kick Ass himself.

Now watching Death Note, the 2006 Japanese film. I understand this story has rather a high status here on fedi, but that's likely because of the manga this film is based on. I don't know much about the story though, going in fresh, except that I'm surprised there isn't a fediverse account posting posts each with just a single name of one of the world's bad persons on it.

Though this is probably one of those things where you shouldn't mix fantasy and reality.

No particular actress I'm watching this for this time, just that way back this dvd was 3 for €25 at the shop.

Almost all female characters have no personality whatsoever if they exist at all, I dislike that in a film. The subject matter could have done with more depth of the emotional consequences of the actions, it's now all so lightweight.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

The ending being unsatisfactory is being explained away by there being a sequel, but I'm not sure I want to see it.

Read some reviews that were essentially like: 'much better than the Netflix one, 2 1/2 stars'. Actually the reviews were quite mixed, some people who already knew the characters from the original really liked this film, and didn't seem to notice that the characters barely existed here.

"They do have a right to defend themselves, but they don't have the right to breach international humanitarian law"

That's well put by the Irish Taoiseach, I was looking for these words myself.

Interesting, WordPress hashtags that work on Friendica and Mastodon, do not come through on Pleroma. Same for edits.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Extra interesting how a WordPress post gets displayed once received. The post itself is sent as the excerpt plus its link (my current settings). The display then tries to add a meaningful link preview for the link, which is again the excerpt. Yet another reason to limit link previews on the receiving side.

I still don't manage to upload a working video to Friendica, but at least I've figured out a way to 'fix' the broken upload flow for media on WordPress:

Upload the file. Find that it doesn't show on posts because it hasn't been uploaded to CDN. Click Purge from CDN, even though you want the opposite. Find that you now have many errors in the purge queue indicating none of the purges succeeded. Find that magically the media now does show because it has been uploaded to CDN.

Previously I had to reupload the whole media library to CDN, which took about half an hour, each time I added one image or video.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

But I can steal the video url from the blog post and use it in a Friendica video tag...
in reply to Gidi Kroon

If I recall, Friendica limits uploaded videos to some very small size, like 2M or something like that. These limits were removed around 2013 for other branches of that software family tree such as Hubzilla and streams; but I think they are still in place for Friendica. Might ask one of the current developers to verify this but I did see somebody mention it just a month or two ago.

Content Warning: recent violent events in Israel

Thinking about the horrific event a few days ago where 260 young people at a party were gunned down with machine guns in cold blood, in a planned attack.

The organisation that planned that and the people that celebrate that can't count on my sympathy. The ordinary people on either side that suffer as a result, can.

Watching Wednesday for only the fifth time ever. Jenna Ortega is so good!
#JennaOrtega #Wednesday
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's the episode with the second of two cello scenes by Jenna in the series. It's my understanding many more were filmed in the series, but they had to be cut because the episodes ran too long. I so hope we get to see them some day.
#JennaOrtega #Wednesday
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's also the episode of the extreme camera angles in front of the fireplace.

I have so many alerts set with JustWatch, to notify me when something I want to watch is finally available in my country, but mostly they remain silent. Just now, however, I got the notification that Women Talking is on Amazon. A film with Jessie Buckley and Claire Foy, how can you not want to see it. Watching it now.
#ClaireFoy #JessieBuckley #WomenTalking #NowWatching
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's a really impressive film. The women of a religious colony discuss their options after generations of abuse by the men. These discussions go deep into matters of morality, religion and personality. I like that the film has as narrator/pov a young girl who isn't just the observer but who the writer allows to be more involved and occasionally inject into the discussions things like 'why are you making it so complicated!'. The character played by Claire Foy has some really fiery dialogue and it's not often that a film throws you against the back of your seat by the sheer fire of the lines and their performance, and the truth of them.

Regarding content warning you need to know that, even though the abuse is never shown on screen, the aftermath is (sometimes rather graphically) and the level of abuse discussed is of an extreme sexual nature, targeting women and very young children.
#WomenTalking

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Spoilers for Women Talking
It happens more often that a young girl is used as point of view, where she represents the next generation that is as of yet unaffected and can still be saved by changing the world. Of course I could have known that wouldn't be the case in this film. The moment it was mentioned that a child of four years old was abused, you realised that our pov would also not have escaped the horrors, something the end of the film makes even clearer. But maybe the very beginning, where the film is narrated 'to her daughter' should already have told us enough.

Just posted the same post on Pixelfed and Instagram and I'm just not able to deal with their cropping tools on mobile. I'm the common factor, so that will probably be the problem.

I'm watching season three of the iCarly reboot, because of Miranda Cosgrove, and I can take my own slow time going through the season, because of the studio bosses not ordering a season four.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

I really liked the series, it's varied enough in its stories to not be a repetitive kids-running-from-dinosaurs-and-surviving. The characters are quite interesting and multi-faceted. The development of the two girls finding out they like girls and especially each other, was nicely done.

I dislike how Hollywood writers whenever they write a smart teenage girl, invariably shoehorn in a love story with the bad-guy-who-turns-out-to-be-ok, even if it doesn't make sense for the character to be attracted to such a guy. See also Stuck in the Middle.

Just looked up whether my country is doing corona vaccinations again this year and it turns out it's only for 60+ (and risk groups) with them thinking it's no longer a real problem.

Even the US is allowing people to get vaccinated (with some struggles). How do we have worse healthcare than the US?

Happy Birthday Jenna!

Jenna Ortega turns 21 today. I'm going to celebrate by watching some Wednesday and seeing a film of hers (still deciding which). Above photo was posted by her hair stylist Jenny Cho and taken yesterday in Paris.

I've been going through old posts and found out I've been on the fediverse for almost five years. I had no idea it was this long. Anyway, I've been doing an awful amount of test posts it seems...

This is the trailer for three Doctor Who episodes that will be released in or around November 2023. So frustrating that still no date is mentioned, I'm sure I'm going to totally miss it when it finally appears on tv and they announce the release date five seconds before.

it’s either going to start on the 23rd November, or finish on it, or be shown around that weekend.

I’m sure the date will be announced in advance. Do you remember the “Save The Day” campaign for the 50th anniversary?

in reply to Gidi Kroon

not sure if the 3 episodes will be shown on consecutive days or weeks, that’s the only mystery at the moment

Listening to The McCarricks, a husband and wife band consisting of one cello and one violin, making really cinematic music. I just noticed that they do have an EP on TIDAL and Spotify, but it's not the one I have and am listening to (which is self-titled).

I've seen them as support for Kristin Hersh and it was quite magical, their music with a video projection on a screen behind them. Bought the EP from them in person.

Jenna Ortega now also posted what is my favourite photo from her Dior campaign.

Europe's Biggest Dance Show is happening again now, listening to it via Studio Brussel. The BBC set we had a little ago was quite good, Ukraine coming up too (they had a good show last year). Looking forward to Belgium too.

Eleven radio stations in ten countries over Europe broadcast a show together, to share the best dance music of the continent. Each country does a half hour set, of course mainly showcasing their own music.

Belgium (Studio Brussel) coming up next in a few minutes. Dance music is in the soul of the nation and if last year is anything to go by, it's going to be a great set.

It has been my belief that training a system on content to generate other content, is making a derivative of that content. With most free licenses this is not allowed without mentioning the source (all of them) and in case of normally copyrighted work it's just plainly forbidden.

I hope this case, and the others they mention, succeed.

Finally Mastodon will show incoming text formatting (with today's release) and the rest of us can stop wondering how garbled our posts are going to be on Mastodon and we can just post as we intended. Mastodon people still can't write rich text though. Baby steps.

It's not true though that Mastodon used to strip all formatting from posts. They were just very selective about what formatting they preserved:

  • paragraph breaks were preserved
  • hyperlinks were preserved
  • some inline images were preserved

What tended to be messed up on Mastodon:

  • lists
  • context provided by emphasis

me about a year ago: yeah, I can buy this pack of 10 downloads, it's valid for a year, plenty of time to choose; when I've used all downloads in a few months time I'll just buy another pack

Though it may seem weird that PeerTube indicates one (1) view on a video and CloudFront shows 300 requests to that file, seeing that most of those requests were made from Chrome Mobile on an Android tablet located in the Netherlands, from my own ip address, I think we can understand the discrepancy.

Both Friendica and Pleroma seem to have the same problem that video files are loaded the moment they appear in your timeline(*), whether you click play or not. And both are completely ignoring the provided cover image. Mastodon does this much nicer, showing the cover image, the actual PeerTube channel account, and only loading the video in an embedded player after you click to do so.

(*) I know, because when I'm browsing on cellular data I'm almost immediately out of my data bundle if a PeerTube video post appears in my Friendica timeline.

Just like I mentioned for The 4400, I have not seen the last season of The Dead Zone I have on disc either. Here I have seen season one to four on my discs and watched them many years ago, but forgot to watch my season five disc. I've found out there actually is a sixth season as well.

I watched the series because of Nicole de Boer, but her involvement became smaller and smaller, explaining my lack of interest. In this fifth season she's only in a few episodes. More in the sixth.

Let's see whether I still remember the plot. Some guy, Nicole's character's husband gets into a coma. Many years later he unexpectedly wakes up, finding his wife remarried with his best friend. He also finds that he suddenly has visions of things, and decides his mission is to stop bad events and investigate crimes.

Nicole's character is the standard Hollywood 'wife of', where the writers show they don't know how to write an interesting female character.

It starts with the Christmas episode that other lists have as the last episode of season four. It's exactly as you would expect a Christmas episode to be on American television. Now for the real season start.

Database disk had filled up, so thanks to the elasticity of EBS I could just increase the size.

I do think however that on a single user instance, a db of around 30GB is too much. But then I think we shouldn't be storing remote content, but we do.
