Watching Claire Foy because of Claire Foy. She's in the miniseries A Very British Scandal on the BBC. I missed the first episode, but I already like her character Margaret who has a lot more personality than you'd expect from a Duchess.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Not sure what the scandal of the title is yet, but the facts that she's the third wife of the Duke and that she has her own string of men she goes out with may have something to do with it.

So Amazon's Alexa would just suggest stuff it 'found on the web'. Most people have wisened up to not trust random websites, not so these smart devices. And Amazon says it fixed it, but only by stopping it from suggesting such challenges. The main problem therefore remains.

BBC News - Alexa tells 10-year-old girl to put penny in plug socket

I'm watching The Girl Before. I keep mixing up the two main actresses, which is sort of the point since these characters are supposed to look like each other and their stories are told in parallel, sometimes even cutting between them in the same scene.

It's hitting a bit of a limitation of mine. Sometimes I recognise (on tv) someone I wasn't even expecting from their silhouette only, sometimes I don't recognise someone while clearly seeing their face.

Watching Clea DuVall in Carnivàle since it (and all other HBO content) will disappear from my country at the end of the year. Let's see how far I get, I've just started the second and final season.

So they're ready to launch the James Webb Space Telescope!

And yes, I remember it's the Ariane rocket, not the Ariana rocket, after getting it wrong a while back.

An easy trick to remember Ariane vs Ariana: the tall one is not the Grande one.

✅ Rollout complete!

The James Webb Space Telescope and the @ariane5 rocket it’s riding on are all settled in their final position on Earth. Next step: launch on Dec. 25 at 7:20 am ET (12:20 UTC) to #UnfoldTheUniverse: go.nasa.gov/3FqLt9c

Arianespace's Ariane 5 rocket with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope onboard, is rolled out to the launch pad, Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, at Europe’s Spaceport, the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana.

Talked to my daughter (8) about the covid situation this morning.

She said “It’s just like climate change. They won’t do anything because they say it’s too expensive, but it will end up costing humans.”

She’s more correct than she knows, the parallel’s run deeper.

Watching Eliza Dushku's episodes of Banshee (that's starting with 4x04), since from 1 January all HBO content becomes unavailable in the Netherlands.

Hallo @hbomaxnl, 27 jan komt The Fallout wereldwijd bij HBOMax.

The Disney film Upside-Down Magic is surprisingly sad. It's about squashed dreams and kids having to come to terms with having no future. Obviously there's a different resolution to the film. Siena Agudong as Reina (second lead in the film and the reason I watched it) is amazing as the girl who's buckling under the pressure of expectations and insecurities. You really feel this role. Alison Fernandez in the supporting role of Pepper is really good as well; I know her from Logan and the final season of Once Upon a Time. Izabela Rose of course carries the film very well as the girl who's magic is 'upside-down'.

Now watching Brothers because of Natalie Portman, even though she doesn't play one of the brothers. Sounds like she could be the stereotypical military wife, but we'll see how it goes.
#NataliePortman #Brothers

in reply to Gidi Kroon

The story of the brother that was presumed dead is the more interesting one. I think the character of the wife failed to be written in an interesting way, she's just there to support the story of others. She spends a lot of time just looking at people and herding kids. I didn't like the stereotype of her warming to a guy the moment he's kind to her kids. The few moments the character is allowed emotions, Natalie does this well of course. I'd wish her feelings after learning her husband was dead could be explored more than that one scene when she's laying on her bed; the remainder of the time she has to put up a brave face for her family.

I'm watching The Mauritanian because of Jodie Foster. I'm also testing the Pathé Thuis service, where the largest cinema chain in my country lets you watch new and old films at home for a per-film ticket price. This is an old one.
#JodieFoster #TheMauritanian #PatheThuis
in reply to Gidi Kroon

The sound is in surround, which is better than some streaming services that you actually pay a subscription for. The subtitles are Dutch or none, with the latter being really none. Usually when you don't have subtitles on an English language film, you get English subtitles on the foreign language bits. But here they are like, you wanted no subtitles, you get no subtitles, hope you speak Arabic.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

The film is apparently not old, from 2021 it seems. I thought it was older, time flies.

The service has 160 films from 2021 and another 335 from 2020, so a quite up to date catalogue.

This has people worried. The emails also went out to individual hobbyists, testing their reaction, not just to companies and organisations. Intentionally or not, this is research on persons that didn't agree to being, or even knew they were, test subjects.

Because I'm friends with a bunch of privacy folks on here, I want to give a PSA about an oddly worded request for info about data access procedures. It's a Princeton study, and you are under no obligation to respond. I think it's worthwhile to outline the study and my concerns:

The Fallout will be available on HBO Max from 27 January. I'm so excited to see Jenna Ortega in this film!
#JennaOrtega #TheFallout
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Obviously I won't be able to watch it myself, since all HBO content will get removed in my country at the end of this year, with no mention of when it will be back. But I'm excited about everyone else seeing it. I'll have to wait patiently (or not) a little longer.

The cinema release for Scream (the fifth installment starring Jenna Ortega) is now listed in Dutch cinemas as 20 January. Earlier it had said 13, which would have been weird since it's 14 in the US and our Covid measures run to at least 14 Jan.

According to the trivia she was pregnant while filming this. Her character isn't, so that explains the massively big handbags she's carrying in front of her.

Watching Chloë Grace Moretz in Kick Ass and Kick Ass 2 (which I call Hit Girl 1), because Chloë is amazing and because I got a better recording of them than I had before.

I sometimes argue that there's never a real fight between female and male characters in action films, that if there is a fight the female action hero always cleanly knocks out the male baddies. But I stand corrected here. There's a full out fight between a male baddie and the 12yo girl and she receives a lot of punches, having to dig really deep to survive.

I'm not promoting violence of any kind, but I like films being different. If it's an action film and you're going to have violence anyway, this sure is different.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Another great thing about Kick Ass 2 is that it also has Lindy Booth and Ella Purnell in it.

It's good to get the information about the omicron situation from experts, even if the news is bad. Here a thread on Twitter.

My takeaways: a single shot of AstraZeneca gives 0% protection. But 2x Pfizer + Pfizer booster has the same protection we are used to. The latter is what we were going for anyway. Also, the extra doubling rate more than nullifies any reduced illness; in a few days you'll have the same levels of hospitalizations and deaths.

COVID thoughts from cold, Christmas London. TL;DR The Omicron storm clouds are glowering above Europe, but its unclear whether this will just be rain and hail of COVID or rain, hail, tornados and hurricanes of infection and subsequent hospitalisation of COVID.

It's the final weekend with #F1 on tv in the Netherlands. From next year it's recaps only.

If #MaxVerstappen doesn't win the championship this year, we won't see him win it other years either.

But it's about 20 weekends of free time a year to do other stuff.

I'm about to watch me some Olivia Cooke, in Thoroughbreds. Just added on Netflix.

I also learned that people think that the rumoured $799 for a Samsung Galaxy S22 is aggressive pricing, i.e. cheap. That's not my idea of cheap. Prices for high end phones have gone totally out of control.

Working on? Roll out? Next year? Just switch off that algorithm that messes up the feed and we're ok.
