Watching Abigail Breslin, who I know from Nim's Island, in the Tyler Shields directed Final Girl.

Not surprisingly for a film directed by a photographer, every shot looks gorgeous.

Learning new stuff about myself every day. I already knew that I somehow in my formative years missed out on learning to interact normally with friends and I'm slowly getting to terms with the fact that that side of being human, i.e. being a social being with close friends and relationships, is closed off to me. But what I don't like about myself is how jealous I get seeing videos of other people having fun interacting with friends. Why can't I just be happy for them that they have a group where they belong? Why am I like this?

Anyway, sorry to be so heavy. I'm ok, don't worry.

Mobilizon is some groups server marketed as an events server (you can create events as yourself or as a group) which is built with Pleroma as starting point and looks very very good. I tried to use the demo instance, but failed in a few things, Like following a group from Friendica, becoming a member from Friendica and deleting a group.

The self hosting instructions seem very clear and are basically the same as Pleroma. It allows having multiple identities (profiles) to separate your professional and friends interactions, like Friendica used to have.

I'll look into it again another time.

Now Ex Machina for some more Alicia Vikander.

A partially see-through Alicia Vikander, some thoughts on AI, but also on big tech. A question they pose is that once an AI passes a Turing test, will you still consider it human if it clearly looks like a robot. But that may not be the actual question.

Wow, that was quick. I entered an issue in the Friendica github and it got solved before I even finished dinner. Thanks!

About to watch another Alicia Vikander film: Tulip Fever. I don't know what it will be about, but it's likely about the 'tulip fever' which was the first financial bubble that burst spectacularly, centuries ago. People invested in tulip bulbs and drove the price way above its intrinsic value, with the inevitable crash next. I'm sure there were bulb-bros at the time.

@feld Still a lot of money, but ok, it's a myth. Thanks for the link!

Often heard complaints and their workarounds:

  • "Twitter doesn't give you posts in chronological order and inserts 'posts you may also like' based on their algorithm." Not if you select the 'newest posts first' timeline, use the website on a mobile device and hold the device in portrait position rather than landscape. Also when you use lists, it is always chronological and doesn't have adverts.
  • "iTunes uses DRM." If you use iTunes on Windows and download the mp3 files you bought, the files are DRM-free.
  • "Instagram no longer allows you to see a post if you're not logged in." If you remove the user name from the url, you get a publicly visible page again.

I have similar experiences. But to request $5m to cover the price of two DVDs seems a bit much.

Hollywood does however need to wake up to the fact that many people watch films for the actresses (and I guess actors) that appear in them and not because of the producers or directors. Marketing often seems to assume that the cast is not important.

Switched on caching for the networked filesystems (EFS/NFS) that I use, so they are now backed by a local block device. It isn't any faster, but it feels better knowing that it's cached...

Essentially added the ,fsc mount option, installed the cachefilesd package, uncommented the RUN=yes line in /etc/default/cachefilesd. The directory /var/cache/fscache is filling up, so it's doing something.

One thing that is slow over EFS (NFS) is restarting an Elixir or Nodejs server (running them is fine). These access many files, so the network latency adds up. With a cache, this is still the same; it needs to check whether the files are changed after all. Running PHP applications from a networked filesystem is actually very fast, despite what the internet says; opcache does its thing rather well.

I am speechless that countries drop all mitigation under a narrative that the virus is endemic now, and we can all live with it in harmony.

I lived with the virus literally twice: for me it was horror. I conclude I have a right to say I am tired and fed up too.

I was ready to watch #Donkeyhead (by and with #AgamDarshi) on #Netflix which I thought I remembered came out today. The film, not Netflix. But I guess I'm wrong, or maybe it's in the US only.

So it's #TheLastLetterFromYourLover with #FelicityJones instead.

Did I already mention today that I hate these geographic restrictions in the entertainment industry? Stuff is advertised worldwide, but then only a selected subset of people are deemed worthy to see it.

People not being able to turn off their alarms in the morning because some server on the internet is not responding...

I'm sure 'off' is a state that can be achieved with any device, though maybe too permanently.

That guy is so tiring, I don't know what she sees in him. Which sort of makes you question the whole film. Of course I can see what he sees in her.

Python:

>>> a, b, c = 1, 2, 3
>>> a < c > b
True
>>>

Why is Python always different? Why can't a < c > b be like (a < c) > b (and give a type error) like in normal languages? Why does it have to be (a < c) and (c > b)?

Also:

>>> True > False
True
>>> True > False == 0
True
>>>

Sharing that from my Friendica account instead of my Pleroma account is maybe a comment in itself.

Interesting, even though I don't use Funkwhale yet. Especially the first point seems to apply more generally to fediverse servers. I think with current settings I'm ok, but I'll check some more. These are the questions for servers like mine, I think:

  • Does your server proxy remote media to be included in a visible post and does it check the media is indeed remote and is actual media. It's my belief that on my servers the answers are 'no, n/a' and 'yes, yes'.
  • Does your server show link previews in a visible post and does it sanitise the included information? Here it is for me 'yes, yes' I think.

Hey everyone! o/

A few months ago, we had a security audit of Funkwhale performed as part of our funding agreement. Due to the recent changes to our structure we've not had time to talk about it, so let's do that now!

I'm definitely going to check it out, but I'll have to wait until at least 3 Feb when it's scheduled to be released here. But that schedule seems not to be updated yet with the longer cinema closures, so I guess it'll be later still.

I’ve been working and unable to visit the theaters,but for everyone who has made their way over to watch our little movie #SCREAM,it means so much to everyone involved. I’ll be selfish and say especially me. If you haven’t,consider checking it out! We hope to show you a fun time!

Far From The Madding Crowd watching Carey Mulligan, like at home, alone, pandemic-like. Bad joke based on the film's name which likely has nothing to do with that, being from 2015. Carey is a great actress who I saw first in Doctor Who, in that episode that basically didn't feature the Doctor but just her (Blink).

A fiercely independent woman gets three wedding proposals, which increasingly don't consider her own feelings. Ununderstably she chooses the last of the three and then to her shock is unhappy. Ok, that's just my gripe with these kinds of stories. I like how she is portrayed as independent and how she remains so and how Carey Mulligan makes her a full character that you believe in (choices of men aside).

I used to think that storylines where the male character needs to prove his love to the female character, and subsequently her love or free will doesn't matter, were a sign the writers were only men. But it's with women writing too.

Starting off #DoveWatch in honour of Dove Cameron's 26th birthday today with the film Cloud 9. It's one of the first films she ever made, maybe the first. I hadn't seen it yet, but it was recently broadcast on the Disney Channel.

Finally in #DoveWatch, it's getting late, one of the episodes of season five of Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that Dove Cameron starred in as unhinged assassin Ruby. I'm doing 5x15, but they're all great.

I also like the story of the young Hale. What these male Hydra leaders seem to think the highest honour a female student can get is.

I didn't see it before, but twitter allows you to set a content warning on photos now. Maybe they can just rebrand to Mastodon already.

Happy Birthday @DoveCameron !

She turns 26 today and I'll be celebrating by listening yet again to my Spotify playlist with just her songs, rewatching 'Schmigadoon!' and finally watching my recording of 'Cloud 9'.

I've seen a lot of Liv and Maddie recently already, so I guess I'll rewatch some of her other projects. Like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Mentalist, Barely Lethal. And Descendants {1,2,3} of course. But there are only 24 hours in a day...

Upgraded Pleroma to the newest version. Thanks to its upgrade instructions having been really stable over time, the script I created a while ago made it a breeze.

It's nothing special, just this:

#!/bin/bash

pushd ~pleroma/pleroma \
&& sudo -u pleroma MIX_ENV=prod -s -- eval 'git pull -q && mix deps.get && mix compile' \
&& sudo systemctl stop pleroma \
&& sudo -u pleroma MIX_ENV=prod -s -- eval 'mix ecto.migrate' \
&& sudo systemctl start pleroma \
&& popd

Obviously I back up first, with another script.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

The #pleroma backup script is less universally useful I guess, just for completeness:

#!/bin/bash

export PGHOST=<redacted>
export PGDATABASE=<redacted>
export PGUSER=<redacted>

timestamp=$(date +%F_%H%M) \
&& pg_dump -w --format=custom -f ~admin/backups/pleroma_prod-${timestamp}.pgdump \
&& sudo tar zcvf ~admin/backups/config-pleroma-${timestamp}.tgz \
        --ignore-failed-read \
        /etc/letsencrypt/{live,archive}/pleroma.gidikroon.eu \
        /etc/systemd/system/pleroma.service \
        /etc/nginx/sites-available/pleroma.gidikroon.eu \
        ~pleroma/pleroma/config/prod.secret.exs \
        ~pleroma/pleroma/config/vm.args \
        ~pleroma/pleroma/instance/static \
        ~admin/bin \
&& aws s3 mv ~admin/backups/pleroma_prod-${timestamp}.pgdump s3://<redacted> \
&& aws s3 mv ~admin/backups/config-pleroma-${timestamp}.tgz s3://<redacted>
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Note that this script does not backup uploaded media. This is because media is on s3 and handled there.

Oh wow. The test whether having rss feeds set as external self accounts on a #Friendica forum, would result in that forum automatically distributing feed items to members, succeeded. Ideal for a news based forum!

(and thanks to a certain actress having lots of news today on the various entertainment sites)

I'm sorry for the content in this channel being almost exclusively Jenna Ortega at the moment and I'd gladly share news of the other actresses I follow, but there's just so many projects of her now that the others really need to step up...
