This 'Mastodon is difficult to understand' is the new 'VCRs are difficult to program', i.e. a way to separate the fashionable people from the nerds. I'm the latter.

Finished watching series two of His Dark Materials, excited for series three tomorrow. I hope it explains the confusion I had with the way story arcs were wrapped up at the end of the second series, especially around Will's father. And in fact Lyra's. And I hope Lyra will become important again, which seemed to go away in that series. I haven't read the books, so I don't know.

Episode 5 of The Sandman, "24/7", is actually quite good, mainly because it's not at all like the episodes that came before it. It's featuring different characters and has a different concept.

The good thing about holding back from properly cleaning the table after spilling a drink over it is that if you spill another drink in the same day you don't feel that bad about it. Currently debating whether to wait for the third one.

People doing group think is bad, worse when this group think is that they are somehow victims.

Americans selecting entertainment things that were great in a year that was my youth, using American lists, always has me thinking I don't know any of these.

His Dark Materials series three gets released on HBO Max this Monday, 5 December. It'll be later in December on the BBC. I'm rewatching series one and two because it is so good and Dafne Keen is such a good actress. I'm at 1x07 now.

A good director will know that if you have a good actress you can just let a scene play out by having a continuous close-up of her face and you don't actually need to see the scene itself. I've seen that done with great effect several times, as it is here with Dafne Keen.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

The first time I was aware of this choice of shot was long ago when Emilia Fox was an unknown actress, two super famous actors were doing a scene and her character had no lines or involvement in that scene. Yet the director realised her talent over those super famous people and had the camera just on her face this whole long scene. It was very powerful. And a very courageous thing to do for the director, given the difference in industry standing. (I think it's in the director's handbook under what to do if your two stars have an off day and the new girl is very talented)

Only one day left for the rewatch. Series two has only seven episodes, though. I still haven't heard the explanation why the BBC suddenly cancelled one of the eight episodes (was it after filming, or just before). It made the ending of series two a bit weird.

I happened to look at my tv without my glasses on. I had turned it on already because I'm going to rewatch His Dark Materials, but I was first checking out my tablet. If I squinted my eyes I could just about make out that the HBO app was already on the correct card, since it looked like the big title was about three words. I'm reminded of the guy I used to know who complained that the pixels of his computer monitor were the wrong shape. To me not even cga monitors had pixels.

I dislike 'whisper-acting', so having the lead in this series do that is not nice. And now they even have another character mumble to address a crowd.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

I like watching fantasy and I like seeing great acting, so when the two of these come together I'm very happy. When it's only fantasy and not the other, not so much.

I feel that both Instagram and YouTube could use a marking when something is an original production vs a repost, fan edit or reaction vid. And a search filter for that.

Keeping a mental to-do list of things to add to a to-do list.

Ginny & Georgia season two will be on Netflix on 5 January next year. I don't know whether Katie Douglas will also be in it, I hope she is, and since she's the one that announced it on her Instagram story I have hopes.

W.r.t. eating your dinner in front of the tv or at your dinner table, has anyone ever eaten their pizza not in front of the tv?

We apologise if you feel you wasted your time reading this post.

Apparently people have watched Wednesday over 340 million hours in a single week, even I can't claim that's all me. It's a record. It is number 1 in 83 countries.

Before Wednesday Jenna Ortega had 8 million followers on Instagram, which I think is a lot, and with the Wednesday promotion going on it had creeped up to 9 million. I was wondering whether the release would lift it over the 10 million. Now, a week after the release, she has 16.6 million followers on Instagram. I guess people like what she did.

Apparently you all have watched 341.2 million hours of my show in 1 week - a Netflix record. Did your eyeballs bleed? A girl can dream.

Had to clean that part of the house that normally doesn't get cleaned: the vacuum cleaner.

Such is the success of Wednesday that after years of me being the only lonely one talking about Jenna Ortega on the fediverse addressing the void, there are now multiple people 'here' posting about her show. (I tried to reshare but it doesn't work at the moment)

(And search actually works on Friendica, just saying... Discoverability, as ever on the fediverse, not so much)

Can next time when I say an actress is really good, people just believe me?

Why would it insert this horrible image(*) in the blog post preview when the post has no images of its own. Why can't it just leave the preview without an image? I've disabled that WordPress plugin for now.

Starting a rewatch of His Dark Materials, all the way from series one, because series three starts soon. This was the first time I saw Dafne Keen and the reason I watched Logan. I think most people will have seen her in Logan first and be very impressed by her and the intensity of the character, but also seeing her first in His Dark Materials impresses a lot.

Watching it on HBO Max instead of my blu-ray, because views count in this day and age. Production and tv companies really look at views and social media engagement to decide who to hire, what kind of show to commission. Record companies look at number of likes whether to finance a tour. Casting people look at imdb rankings, which are based in part on searches. It's unfair, but to support your faves, engage.

Can we have a House of the Dragon prequel series? A Game of Thrones prequel prequel. Then Milly Alcock can play Rhaenyra again. I've finished the series now and I'm not sure I'm looking forward to it continuing in this timeline.

Wednesday stating the truth as usual.

Wednesday episode 1x04
That dance in episode four that Jenna choreographed herself is so amazing, that I'm thinking she is not only going to be awarded the Emmy for her performance as Wednesday Addams, which seems a given at this point, but maybe also for the choreography.

I guess it's going to be a weekend of doing some WordPress stuff. Writing a post, but also finding out how and if the block-theme works and setting up a multisite install for real.

Putting it out here so it will feel as more of a failure if I don't. Since I was going to do it last weekend...

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Ok, only did the first thing and then got into a wordpress-plugin-rabbit-hole.

Don't like how these radio stations here in my country are pushed to play dutch rap, or as I call it, drap.

Got reminded of doing a training a few years back where the trainer, from South Africa, was presenting slides, made in the US, while she would dramatically stop and apologise profusely for the spelling mistakes whenever American spelling appeared in the slides.

I've been informed my electricity bill will rise from 53c to 40c and I guess I'm misunderstanding the full picture.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Ah, it had risen from 8c to 17c then 22c and is now 53c, would rise to 83c next year but will be capped at 40c. Yet, I apparently use such a small amount of electricity, that in the most recent yearly bill I got money back. Also, the specification of past year shows that of the electricity they delivered to me, 100% was wind energy, so yay!

Wednesday is out. Thank you to everyone involved/everyone who was supportive throughout the process. I hope the show is an easy, entertaining watch if you’re up for it. Enjoy the holiday. If you do watch, argue with people about it. You all are going to be arguing tomorrow anyway

I'm three episodes in and it's so so good! Jenna is amazing, striking exactly the right tone to let a character like Wednesday Addams lead the story and draw you in.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

It was totally amazing. I want a season two. It's showing such great judgement by Jenna Ortega of presenting exactly the right kind and amount of internal torment to hook you on the character and the story, while also being true to the version we know who had her emotionless one-liners as a support character but which wouldn't work for leading eight episodes. This works. But we know, and many people say it, Jenna always delivers.

Long, interesting interview in The Face magazine with Jenna Ortega by Olivia Rodrigo. A very different photo shoot, with many interesting photos.
