Via a colleague I found out that "Rancher Desktop by SUSE" is an almost drop-in replacement for "Docker Desktop". So if you were using the latter for running docker, compose and kubernetes on your windows developer machine, but had to stop because it is no longer free, you can stop the workarounds and use Rancher instead. See rancherdesktop.io .

or Podman Desktop, it is too an open source alternative to Docker Desktop
