Going around correcting people who didn't ask you to is such an ugly trait. It is not 'helping people get a feel for the place'.

There may be around five million accounts on the fediverse, but four million of those are me.

uspol, midterm elections
I find it hard to parse what the election results so far mean. It's easy to put a positive spin on it, it's easy to see possibly losing control of a chamber as problematic. But with all that went on (coup, supreme court decisions), a total 100% wave of Democratic successes is the only thing that would make sense. And that's not happening, it's all still so 50-50. My conclusion is so far that the US as a whole just doesn't care about abortion rights, women, or democracy.

Just had my fourth Corona vaccination, yay! Another one next year I guess.

I suspect there are some people watching the federated timeline fire hose and then decry that people should use content warnings. One of the reasons I'd wish the federated timeline didn't even exist. To be replaced by good search, lists and just following people, filters and temporary mute buttons.

Wait until all these new people find out there's also a whole alternative to YouTube. And that because the whole of the fediverse is connected, you're already connected to that!
#PeerTube #YouTube #fediverse
in reply to Hyproviola

@Hyproviola I'm totally not taking credit for the term fediverse... It's based on the fact that there are all these different platforms 'federating' with each other, like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, Misskey, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Zap, etc.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Yeah I understood that, I meant that I've been seeing that term around #Mastodon. It seems really cool, and with the whole #Twitter thing, it might actually become mainstream.

To have 44 billion dollars that you can just burn.

And it isn't even without precedent, the freenode guy did it before.

I'm watching this show illegally: it says I have to be 16 to watch it, but I'm much older than that. Don't tell my tv!

A few days after every wave of influx comes the tone policing. I guess a few days from now we'll get the next stage: calls to implement server-allow-lists as opposed to blocking.

You don't need to delete your Twitter account to have a fediverse account. You can use both.

For healthy Twitter usage I'd suggest putting people you want to keep seeing in a list, and look at that list instead of the main timeline. Chronological, no ads, no promoted tweets.

Dafne Keen had said she was filming something big, turns out it's something called 'Star Wars'. So not bigger than His Dark Materials then, I guess.

I've got stuff to do and tv shows to watch, so obviously I was looking up how to install alternative linux desktop environments. They make it sound easy, I may try it. Like sudo apt install kubuntu-full or sudo apt install ubuntu-studio-installer, or at least something like that.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's not as smooth switching between the two as they make it out to be, as you also need to switch the default display manager, and some icons and titlebars get changed anyway, but I can work with it.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Apparently you also have to reset the gnome theme to get the icons and titlebars back. Why installing kde would change the gnome theme I don't know.

"You'll still get the same amount of ads, they will just not be personalised."

Right, no. You'll hardly get any ads and mostly just blank spaces where the ads would go. Really people, just click these reject-all, object-all buttons and enjoy the quiet.

Wine & fries are now also on the fediverse! A bit less obscure: @Asha Rangappa is here.

I love that scene with Rhaenyra in episode two of House of the Dragon, I'm sure you know which one I mean if you've seen it. Especially how afterwards the camera lingers on the faces of 'the men of the realm' that she just has been told will never accept a female ruler, and after she's done 'that' you see them starting to think, 'maybe, after all, just maybe'. She's proving to be such a powerful character, I love it.

Starting to watch Adult Material with Hayley Squires. The tv series, not... She's a really good actress who isn't that known yet, but she leads this series. I've seen her before in impressive supporting roles in Collateral and The Miniaturist.

Me after seeing her in The Miniaturist and being very impressed with what she brings extra to the scenes though she only played a small role of the servant: let's look her up in imdb, maybe there's something else I can see her in. Hey, she was also in Collateral. I remember there was also someone in there who really made a role extra strong despite having not much lines, I think it was a manager of a pizza place. But what role did Hayley play there? Imdb: manager of pizza place.

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Right from the start I'd better turn the volume down or the neighbours will have thoughts about what I'm watching... It's about a porn actress and immediately it's clear she's a force of nature.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's developing as an interesting story and Hayley's character is really powerful.
#AdultMaterial

Started watching The Sandman and House of the Dragon, finished episode one for both just now. I like my fantasy. But I also like my fantasy with strong female characters and The Sandman is lacking that so far. I see that Jenna Coleman is in it from the next episode, so I'll stick with it for now. House of the Dragon certainly delivers in that respect. But Game of Thrones it is not, but what is.

People on Mastodon, please make your posts about 1 or 2 hours before you have the thought to compensate for laggy queues. People on other software, as you were.

#FediTip for those used to mainstream sites and are now trying open source platforms (social, blogging, etc): if you upload photos from your phone, you're used to the site compressing it and stripping the metadata out of it so you don't end up exposing your location etc. Not all open source platforms do that or not by default. A lot do, but keep in mind that taking a photo at home and uploading it may expose your home address. Or taking a screenshot of a site exposes the url with potentially account information in it.

I believe Mastodon is safe in this regard, or at least mastodon.social is. Wordpress is not. Others depend on the admin.

There's an Android app on f-droid called #ImagePipe that can strip metadata from photos before sharing.

I feel for the Dutch actors that they had do the dub for The Peripheral, literally no-one will listen to it. We do subtitles.

What is it about the word NFT that causes people to respond to the statement "we don't like NFTs and don't want to discuss it", with discussing it?

The good thing about the fediverse is that you don't have to agree with the rules set by your moderators, you can move to a server that you do agree with. Or even run your own.

The good thing about being on your own server is that there's no big influx of users backing up queues making everything slow :-)

Very recently a new streaming service started in The Netherlands: #SkyShowtime . Apparently this includes Paramount+! So I've started watching the #iCarly reboot (because of Miranda Cosgrove) (finally!) and am now re-watching Scream (because of Jenna Ortega).

Years ago, before verified accounts were a thing, back when I was on Eastenders, I was contacted multiple times by parents of children who had been “conversing” with me online. 11-15 year old children that had been talking with a fake me.
I was informed one of these children-

So, I'm linked. Didn't find new people, but it may be useful for people who follow me on Twitter. That's hardly anybody, but if my brother joins the fediverse he can find me...
#twitodon

Part of the Twitter exodus? This tool is a bit clumsy but one way to cross-search for people you follow on Twitter who are also on here: twitodon.com

No offence to all the grey white men into programming that already inhabited this space, but even though I'm one myself I'm very glad to see the influx of so many other types of people. Especially so many science people, love it.

Tip that may soon be obsolete: in Friendica you can (if the admin allows it) couple your Friendica account with your Twitter account.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

(because if Twitter goes the way of MySpace, why would you even use that account?)

Got today's framed.wtf (daily film guessing game) in one guess! But it really was a guess.

Chloë Grace Moretz interviewed by Wired based on autocomplete searches. Does she sing, play cello, speak foreign languages? Did Martin Scorsese think she's British? Short version in the quote-shared tweet, longer on YouTube.

Another thing #Activitypub gets blamed for unjustly: text formatting! Activitypub suggests HTML for the post contents and HTML has bullet lists (and other rich text). This post above has bullet lists. If you're not seeing lists, Mastodon has stripped the formatting from the post for no clear reason. That's not the spec...

Was wondering, with everybody and everything saying that it is illegal to play music outside a domestic setting and that it is highly illegal to run e.g. an online music radio station without a license, how much would such a license cost? Since that is never added, they just say don't do it, we'll get you.

Turns out it's twice €312 per year. Once for paying the performers, once for paying the writers. And you somehow have to tell the electrons to stop in their cables once they reach the border.

(Dutch prices for small noncommercial radio; for worldwide you have to pay similar prices in every single country in the world after somehow finding the local organisation for that)

I googled a question I had and actually found an answer, how weird.

With all the account migrations going on, I have to occasionally check Pleroma for migration notifications and do the re-follow manually from Friendica. So apologies for the extra follow requests that come in late, which I know are especially annoying for locked accounts. Sorry.
