Did you ever spend time on a college campus over the holidays, a situation sort of like the movie The Holdovers though not quite as much fun in the end. (A knowledge of the film is not required to answer.) The situation may have been that your parents couldn't afford to fly you home or you didn't have a car or a ride. Or maybe your family was just weird and neglectful. I am working on a horror story based on this, but it's not extreme. Still, it is a situation I can relate to, and it is not fun.

@jalefkowit Yes, it's sort of haunting, and hard to know how to fill the time that is not depressing. You might like the movie The Leftovers in terms of the concept that it built, but then it became kind of a feel good. A super dark movie based on this premise is Blackcoat's Daughter, but trigger warning on that...so be warned. I just think it's interesting in terms of a psychological space and in terms of a double whammy especially for those who suspect some kind of neglect in the home life.

@jalefkowit That would have been fun! So yes, you have a solid sense of the situation that I'm describing here. Thank you for this.

@Margaret Sefton Or maybe you're taking really sensitive measurements that get disturbed when someone calls an elevator. Best to do these over the holidays... Was nice and quiet... and these university buildings were never really empty because enough people had similar reasons to be there.

@gidi Yet another scenario I hadn't thought of! Thank you. Still, the quiet in largely unused buildings lends itself well to unease. 🖤
