I honestly don't think this comic will help with those people. Their brains are probably already mushy enough that they can't see the parallels.

, but I get dozens of them, weekly, on the Meta platforms (Facebook/Instagram)...
I'm really grateful for how this community checks artists' work and actually verifies it's real human art before throwing random accusations.
This is my favorite place to share for a reason. 💜

in reply to David Revoy • • •I mean I would HOPE people would need a real smoking gun to say that YOUR art is AI. I mean a lot of MFT is Anti-AI, so that would be random if it was made with AI.
Either way it's usually better to question, but not accuse when it comes to AI I think. Unless it is very much egregiously AI than it's better not to just throw accusations.
At least in this comic the vibe I get is just wanting to be a critic and not actually appreciating art though.

Absolutely love your stuff. I love that the lack of algorithm in the fediverse doesn't bubble up "engagement" for you, and that you know you're really valued!
I mean, by me.. Whoever I am.. BUT STILL! Love your work!

in reply to David Revoy • • •you'd have to be an idiot to still be using the Meta platforms as a non-creator*, so it makes sense that so many wouldn't be able to tell the difference between your wonderful work and slop.
* I understand creators and brands need to stay on there for their livelihoods. I wish they didn't, but I wouldn't call artists needing to make a living "idiots."

Also: If someone sees your "making of" videos and all the Krita videos then it is quite hard to think that your stuff could be AI.

I have my doubts. It's not just the drawing. Just getting a grasp of modern problems mixed with fantasy RPG theme is totally creative for me. Those who ignore all of that now will most likely do so regardeless later on. I think many just see boosted strips and not the other stuff.
I also like the other stuff an forwarded some of your videos to a friend (@KathyKahner). She mostly draws with good old tools like pen&paper. So I thought it might come in handy for her (maybe some time in the future) to get a glimpse of what someone could do with Krita.
Although I suck at drawing (i'm in awe of your skills!), I am still fascinated about the workflow in digital Art.
(But most of all I really like this #miniFantasyTheater strips.)

Ici, tu postes un contenu IA, t'as la Fedi-police qui défonce ta porte d'entrée avec un bélier (un bélier furry, hein, faut pas oublier qu'on est sur le fediverse)
Et tant mieux !

People are getting a bit too complacent about being stupid as hell

in reply to David Revoy • • •On one hand, we know AI in general has a bias for yellow because yellowish images have a higher tendency of getting marked as "good looking" because of the "golden hour" in photography.
On the other, true, while AI hurts artists, due to that, even more for those who like yellow tones!

in reply to David Revoy • • •But their is always souls in your work !
The issue with other platform is that people expect ai stuff, they want to see ai stuff and it must look like ai. When they say "it's ai, right" it's not because they don't value your work but because they want to know that they can make a prompt and do the same.
I could be completely wrong, but why stay on such places if they don't want ai crap ?
Soso
in reply to David Revoy • • •I hate that I myself sometimes see genuine art and have doubts that it's AI. I guess it makes me pay more attention to the artist behind the art I see which is good.
Now that "looking like good art" is something that AI can do, paying attention to what it's conveying and who's making it is more important than ever.
I'll take community over mindless consumption everytime

I know it's easy to say, but don't take it personally, I've always been a fan of both your art and your open source tooling/process.
This stuff is one reason I'm really happy the EU is requiring AI involvement to be labeled as such; it works both ways, and hopefully other countries/areas will follow, so we can put an end to this.

in reply to David Revoy • • •This is one of the things about AI generated art that many people don't think about... it's that *psychologically* speaking, regardless of whether we use AI or not, we're all now in a state of constantly questioning whether something is authentic or not.
This is an incredibly erosive precedent to be set for human culture. We live in truly dangerous times.

in reply to David Revoy • • •Oh damn! I owe you a sincere apology.
I'm used to avoid AI slop, and my reaction to the image 1 was “AI gen”. I even closed the image, and then saw the title “Authenticity Problem,” it made me doubt myself. I reopened the image, read the comic, and then watched the timelapse, which confirmed that it was indeed your work and not AI.
And now I can’t even imagine what it must be like for you. Hang in there, and great work despite everything!
And again, sorry! Apparently, I'm biased

And on top of that, it seems you’re a FOSS advocate and a Krita user (and maybe Blender, if I understand correctly).
So clearly, I would have missed out on an opportunity, especially since I’m trying again to get into Krita, among other foss.

in reply to David Revoy • • •@David Revoy Not that I would compare myself to an artist, but in a similar fashion I have already been told that my prose (mostly technical prose—again, not an artist!) must have been AI-generated due to my propensity to use em dashes…
Damn it, I—and countless other writers—have been using em dashes long before those stochastic parrots came into being!

in reply to Damien Goutte-Gattat • • •@dgouttegattat
A lot of technically-minded people use a lot of parentheticals to cover details, and em-dashes really help.
I suspect the AI uses them because it tends to random-walk around the point. It's bad at staying on topic. I always have the impression that it's weaving all over the road and bouncing off the guardrails.
@davidrevoy
David Revoy
in reply to Space Catitude 🚀 • • •@TerryHancock @dgouttegattat True, I wasn't familiar with em-dash before making the translation system for Pepper&Carrot, in French it's not common, we often use the : or ; to split sentences like that, and of course, yes, personally I use too many parenthesis (of course). But I also adopted it.
One of the AI effect I observed; now many French articles have this US/English way to construct sentences, with em-dash. And French tends to adopt it, so AI is shifting local culture more than we think.

Well... Sometime an artistic content has its own life in the hand of users; I hope the audience can see and find the source that it is not really the message the author wanted to convey.
