Started watching The Sandman and House of the Dragon, finished episode one for both just now. I like my fantasy. But I also like my fantasy with strong female characters and The Sandman is lacking that so far. I see that Jenna Coleman is in it from the next episode, so I'll stick with it for now. House of the Dragon certainly delivers in that respect. But Game of Thrones it is not, but what is.

#FediTip for those used to mainstream sites and are now trying open source platforms (social, blogging, etc): if you upload photos from your phone, you're used to the site compressing it and stripping the metadata out of it so you don't end up exposing your location etc. Not all open source platforms do that or not by default. A lot do, but keep in mind that taking a photo at home and uploading it may expose your home address. Or taking a screenshot of a site exposes the url with potentially account information in it.

I believe Mastodon is safe in this regard, or at least mastodon.social is. Wordpress is not. Others depend on the admin.

There's an Android app on f-droid called #ImagePipe that can strip metadata from photos before sharing.

I feel for the Dutch actors that they had do the dub for The Peripheral, literally no-one will listen to it. We do subtitles.

What is it about the word NFT that causes people to respond to the statement "we don't like NFTs and don't want to discuss it", with discussing it?

The good thing about the fediverse is that you don't have to agree with the rules set by your moderators, you can move to a server that you do agree with. Or even run your own.

The good thing about being on your own server is that there's no big influx of users backing up queues making everything slow :-)

Very recently a new streaming service started in The Netherlands: #SkyShowtime . Apparently this includes Paramount+! So I've started watching the #iCarly reboot (because of Miranda Cosgrove) (finally!) and am now re-watching Scream (because of Jenna Ortega).

Years ago, before verified accounts were a thing, back when I was on Eastenders, I was contacted multiple times by parents of children who had been “conversing” with me online. 11-15 year old children that had been talking with a fake me.
I was informed one of these children-

So, I'm linked. Didn't find new people, but it may be useful for people who follow me on Twitter. That's hardly anybody, but if my brother joins the fediverse he can find me...
#twitodon

Part of the Twitter exodus? This tool is a bit clumsy but one way to cross-search for people you follow on Twitter who are also on here: twitodon.com

No offence to all the grey white men into programming that already inhabited this space, but even though I'm one myself I'm very glad to see the influx of so many other types of people. Especially so many science people, love it.

Tip that may soon be obsolete: in Friendica you can (if the admin allows it) couple your Friendica account with your Twitter account.

(because if Twitter goes the way of MySpace, why would you even use that account?)

Got today's framed.wtf (daily film guessing game) in one guess! But it really was a guess.

Chloë Grace Moretz interviewed by Wired based on autocomplete searches. Does she sing, play cello, speak foreign languages? Did Martin Scorsese think she's British? Short version in the quote-shared tweet, longer on YouTube.

Muay Thai, first-person shooter games, and vacation hotel room tattoos - @ChloeGMoretz is the kind of person we want to hang out with!

Another thing #Activitypub gets blamed for unjustly: text formatting! Activitypub suggests HTML for the post contents and HTML has bullet lists (and other rich text). This post above has bullet lists. If you're not seeing lists, Mastodon has stripped the formatting from the post for no clear reason. That's not the spec...

Was wondering, with everybody and everything saying that it is illegal to play music outside a domestic setting and that it is highly illegal to run e.g. an online music radio station without a license, how much would such a license cost? Since that is never added, they just say don't do it, we'll get you.

Turns out it's twice €312 per year. Once for paying the performers, once for paying the writers. And you somehow have to tell the electrons to stop in their cables once they reach the border.

(Dutch prices for small noncommercial radio; for worldwide you have to pay similar prices in every single country in the world after somehow finding the local organisation for that)

I googled a question I had and actually found an answer, how weird.

With all the account migrations going on, I have to occasionally check Pleroma for migration notifications and do the re-follow manually from Friendica. So apologies for the extra follow requests that come in late, which I know are especially annoying for locked accounts. Sorry.

Watching Mila Kunis. Well, she's following a script as Ani in Luckiest Girl Alive and it's on my Netflix. But it's not as if the film's premise of 'woman gets married' drew me in, so I have to be honest and it's because I'm watching her. Right of the bat there's more going on with her character, suggestions of her being psycho, so that's a nice link to where I saw Mila first: American Psycho II: All American Girl. I liked her in that.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Trivia at its truest should be somewhat useless info and this one from imdb is truly that:

Despite having different last names, she and her husband, Ashton Kutcher, have consecutive IMDb profile numbers. Mila has nm0005109 and Ashton has nm0005110.
in reply to Gidi Kroon

This film is completely different from what I thought it was going to be. This line early in the film about being psycho is a red herring. It is about a woman who, possibly due to events that happened when she was a teenager, is a different person on the inside than she is on the outside. Her narrating a lot of the film helps show this. It's a very interesting film.

Watching Suspiria (2018) on blu-ray because it has Chloë Grace Moretz in it, even though she's not the lead. I had a chance to see it in a cinema once, but they literally had The Miseducation of Cameron Post (also with Chloë, but as the lead) playing on another screen, opposite the hallway, in the same cinema at the same time.

Could be scary though...

in reply to Gidi Kroon

It starts with Chloë though! And confusingly, since I play it from a German blu-ray after explicitly selecting the English sound track rather than the German dub, a lot of Chloë's dialogue is in German...
in reply to Gidi Kroon

It's a quiet confusing film, seemingly about the ever connected areas of witchcraft, terrorism and dance.

I need to update the blog post since most mentioned #JennaOrtega projects are out now, but in the pipeline now are:

* #Wednesday (23 November on Netflix)
* Scream 6 (March 2023 in cinemas)
* Finestkind (unfortunately on Paramount+ 😪 )
* Miller's Girl

While Jenna Ortega is making magic in Romania (filming Wednesday) I thought it a good moment to make a list from a fan's perspective of what is in the pipeline. Much to look forward to!

Scream (6) with Jenna Ortega will now be out 10 March 2023, instead of the 31 scheduled earlier. This is the same day as You season four, but it's unlikely Jenna will be in that due to filming loads of other things.

Dove Cameron has a new song out: Bad Idea. After Boyfriend and Breakfast she's still at the B's. What are the chances her album will be called something like B-side?

Great interview with Chloë Grace Moretz in NME about The Peripheral and choosing projects to act in. Also interesting how most photos they use are marked 'do not use'...

Forgot to switch on the daemon processes for Friendica after Thursday's troubles. Interesting how much remains functional without it. Though I do think a properly scalable platform should delegate as much as possible to some queuing system, it seems to work almost fine with just some maintenance jobs using the queue.

Leading up to our Sinterklaas present of His Dark Materials season 3 on 5 December, there's this interesting interview with Dafne Keen in Fabric Magazine, with photos by Joseph Sinclair.

I like seeing the scar on Dafne's forehead in photos: it means the photographer didn't go overboard with the photoshopping, or at least knew enough about their subject to know the scar is a well-known feature of hers.

Watching some #ThePeripheral episodes with #ChloëGraceMoretz. Not actually with Chloë of course, she's likely gaming on her big new computer as we speak.
twitter.com/PowerGPU/status/15…
in reply to Gidi Kroon

Chloë essentially plays three different characters in #ThePeripheral: Flynne in 2032, the Flynne peripheral in the 2100s, and the empty peripheral when Flynne doesn't embody it. The last two look exactly the same of course (same clothes, same hair and makeup), but how Chloë is making these two completely different characters is impressive.

This whole concept of an empty peripheral is a fascinating one...
#ChloëGraceMoretz

The Peripheral episode one
I find it a nice touch that in that first The Peripheral episode Flynne, as a male avatar in a sim, is asked to seduce a woman which she feels some trepidation about. Then when things continue she seems to quite get into it. Chloë is really doing the 'I'm actually enjoying this' bit...

I usually cut and remux video files with a paid Windows program, which is really intuitive to use. I don't mind paying for it, but my Windows PC is very old so now I'm trying to do the same in #kdenlive on my linux laptop. Still at the start of what looks like a steep learning curve.

One thing I just realised: the "project bin" is not like a recycle bin, but something to be used rather than avoided. I was ignoring all menu items that said something with 'bin' when looking for how to cut clips...

Still somewhat annoyed kdenlive can't open video files on network disks, while Windows had no problem with it.

(Oh, when looking up that Windows program, #VideoReDo, I found that the company has ceased due to the founder passing away last month. My attempts to switch are coincidental and not related!)

in reply to Gidi Kroon

Ok, I think I sort of managed to do what I wanted, but it is incredibly slow and the output file is also transformed rather than just having its frames copied. The #kdenlive documentation provides an answer to the problem: it says not to use kdenlive for this, but #avidemux.

I think that sort of worked, but that program looks so old it doesn't fill me with much faith. E.g. it seems to not be able to handle wide-screen videos (16:9) in its preview area. And it also can't open files from network drives.

Watching Vanessa Paradis in Café de Flore on HBO Max, where she's the mother of a son with Down Syndrome. Vanessa may be known as singer, and there too I think she's a much better singer than she's given credit for, but for me she really shines as an actress. Her fame and career as singer allows her to be really selective about the films she does.

Watching #ThePeripheral because the first two episodes came out today, or more precisely because #ChloëGraceMoretz is in it.

Interesting insight into how a character comes to be, among other things. Christina Ricci has a chat with Jenna Ortega about Wednesday.

(My take: I'd always trust @jennaortega to get the character right. It's her artistry we want to see)
