Nice, Friendica has side-blog functionality quite similar to Tumblr. It's not called side-blogs of course...

Wow, after a year of checking whether it is available and now S7 is near in the US, Fear the Walking Dead - Season 6 is finally on Prime Video.

I'm following this series because of Alycia Debnam-Carey, Alexa Nisenson and Karen David. I started watching it because Karen would be in it from S5. I could watch everything at a leisurely pace before S5 was even available. Alycia was in it from S1 and a new discovery for me. Especially from S2 onwards she plays a very powerful character. Then in S4 Alexa is introduced, originally in a guest role, but she impresses so much with her multilayered performance that she will still be there in S7. I hadn't seen her before, but I now know it's worth following her career as well.

I was in a bookshop today and felt a bit sorry for the writer sitting alone behind a table waiting for fans to turn up to have their books signed. Not sorry enough to go up to the table and ask who they were, though.

I'm a bit confused about how photo privacy works in Friendica. But confused in a good way.

You basically upload photos into your photo collection, which may contain private and public photos. When uploading photos via the post editor for a private post, the photos are set as private, for a public post they are set as public; it doesn't present the separate permissions form of the normal photo uploader. Great.

But here's the mystery: if you forget to set the post to private, then upload the photo, only then switch the post to private, you would expect the photo to be uploaded as public. But somehow Friendica knows what you wanted and protects you: my test shows that such a photo is marked as private anyway!

You'll probably also find that if you upload a photo into a post but never finish the post, the photo will be visible only to you - because we never assume that it was meant to be public. I'm certain the actual code is much different now, but that's the way I wrote it originally.

So this apparently needs being stated as some think it's not obvious and some think especially men may have a different opinion: abortion is a right, abortion is healthcare and in a functioning society everybody has access to abortion care.

Also, men have their part to play in preventing abortions at the source.

But what I don't understand about the current American situation is how when 8 in 10 people there support access to abortion and it's a democracy with 50% of the voters men and 50% women, a policy that is such a war on women can be voted in by a democratic institution, and upheld by a court appointed by democratic institutions. Something is wrong in the way people are represented.

Instagram is being a bit like Eventually-a-gram for me at the moment.

That edit button is quickly becoming the killer feature of Friendica in my book.

The past will come back to haunt u (and comment on ur parenting abilities)

A teaser for season three of You where the season two cast comments on the recent baby name reveal. Great to see #JennaOrtega promoting #YouNetflix S3. This doesn't mean she'll be in it, after all most other S2 characters in this clip have died already...

To me Twitter's way of handling link previews makes a lot of sense and is the way you expect it to work as a user. From my recollection what Twitter does is:

  • Consider the last url-like text for a link preview
  • If that doesn't have a twitter card or open graph tags, check the previous url, etc
  • If the previewed url text is the last text of the post, don't show that text
  • If the post contains a photo or video attachment, don't show a link preview at all, only show the media

I think the way posts are presented on the #fediverse could be improved by using these rules. With one extra addition:

  • If an attachment is also present within the post (activitypub posts are html, so that is quite possible), don't show the attachment at the end of the post.

The question whether the sending or receiving server should resolve the link to load the preview is solved by the fourth rule. Most platforms load the preview themselves upon receiving a post, but if a sending server includes it anyway, that rule causes the receiver to skip that step.

Picking up Schmigadoon! again. I had fallen out of the weekly habit of watching these episodes on Apple TV+ due to my holiday and not being home. But I can't let Dove Cameron content be out there without watching it, can I? It's a very fun series too.

Now the final episode! Will they be able to leave the town of Schmigadoon? Will they find true love? And which 'they' are we talking about anyway...

Upgraded my Pleroma to 2.4.1 and it immediately seems to have lost compatibility with Friendica. It was broken before which was fixed in the upcoming Friendica release (a commit I cherry-picked) and now it's unfixed again.

This was not obvious to me, but you can add descriptive text to images in a #Friendica post. When you click the "image" button and select or upload an image, the bbcode for the image is inserted into your post editor. This has a [url] tag for the link to the full image and a [img] tag for the preview image.

It turns out that anything you type between these opening and closing [img] and [/img] tags will be rendered as descriptive text on the image. Adding an alt= or title= attribute doesn't seem to work however.

Example:

[url=https://friendica.gidikroon.eu/photo/1929641322612bfa9fd0155603878394-0.jpg][img=https://friendica.gidikroon.eu/photo/1929641322612bfa9fd0155603878394-1.jpg]This will be the descriptive text of the image[/img][/url]

This post is really weird when viewed on Mastodon or Pleroma. Instead of, or in addition to, the example code, it also shows the image that the url in the example code points to. Which is quite out of context here...

There is going to be an announcement tomorrow related to You, the Netflix tv series. We already know that a season three has been filmed and should soon get a release date. They are now saying there's going to be a reveal of the name of Love and Joe's baby, but I hope we will learn more than that.

Season two introduced the character of Ellie, played by Jenna Ortega, and lots of people including me are hoping Ellie (and Jenna) are going to be a major part of this new season. It does however seem unlikely.

So the baby's going to be called Henry and is a boy after all. Oh, and season three will get released 15 October 2021 on Netflix.

I don't understand why following people from octodon.social and rage.love is broken. Technically, not as a matter of policy. It doesn't seem to resolve the user profiles, though other mastodon servers are ok.

What I find appealing so far about Friendica is that it is more visual, gives more space for the post and its layout. And that you can edit. What I still have to get used to is the formatting methods and that your timeline isn't posts+replies but conversations, i.e. you always get to see the OP first.

Ah, the Friendica experience...

Image description: a post received on the top of my timeline, which indicates that it was posted 4 years ago. But it also says it was edited 5 days ago. But listed as well is that it was received 22 minutes ago...

You see this kind of thing a lot on Friendica. But it is a bit unfair to make fun of it. At least here they indicate these different times; on other platforms you just have to guess why you're seeing a post on top of your timeline...

Apologies for the Facebook link.

People should not comment on another's appearance, especially not negatively, especially not to someone so young. Bella Gantt is very talented and that is the only thing that should be mentioned. And not bother her.

Happy Birthday Alizée!

Here are some of my favourite photos of her. First one by Petra Stevcikova (doesn't it look like she's celebrating? All Petra's photos of Alizée are great btw), second my all time favourite by Annily. (See alt text for why)
