@clarkiestar 88 is a fascist dogwhistle: 8th letter of the alphabet, so it's used to abreviate Heil Hitler. The 88 precepts was also an American fascist text written in like the 80s or 90s: I'm not sure which reading of 88 came first.
It's sometimes also incorporated as 1488, with the 14 representing the white supremacist slogan known as the "Fourteen Words", which was by the same guy as the 88 precepts.
@clarkiestar I should add that I don't actually think this is the derivation of Musk's specific love of the letter X - I don't think the timelines match up for when he really starts embedding himself in explicit Nazi-fascist movements and when he starts obsessing over the letter. But that's the symbolism being discussed anyway.
And I bloody hate that I live in a world where I know this and where knowing this intersects with my job.
